Abstract
Women have been doing more paid work and men more unpaid work, however, women still work less for pay, work more overall and bear negative consequences including worse access to careers and good income and a greater risk of poverty. Mothers, who take significant career breaks to care for children, face particularly strong penalties when it comes to their careers. At the same time men's choices are also curtailed as they are less free to opt for unpaid work.
