Recycling aluminium alloys for the automotive application

Abstract
Recycling aluminium alloys have been shown to provide major economic and environmental benefits, therefore, it is tremendous interest to understand and optimise the benefits of recycling aluminium alloys. Hence, it is appropriate for the aluminium industry and end user (e.g. automotive industry) as a whole to identify, develop, and implement all potential technologies that will maximise the benefits of recycling. Through the collaboration with industry, a current challenge has been identified, that is the tolerance of residual elements in particular Fe in Al alloys and it could be modified when alloys are recycled. The objective of this study is to understand the tolerance of various elements, e.g., Fe, Si, Cu with respect to the processing (e.g. forming). In this research work the PhD candidate will work closely with the REALITY (Recycled Aluminium Through Innovative Technology) closed-loop project towards developing alloy or further understand alloy such as RivAlloy during the casting and forming. The project will conclude with a recommendation and further understating about new alloys which is capable of high Fe tolerance for automotive application
