System Architecture & Accelerator Physics Design Optimisation for Future Facilities based on Multi-Pass Superconducting Energy Recovery Linacs

Abstract
The proposed future accelerator projects PERLE, EIC Cooler and UK-XFELR are all based on a multi-pass, recirculating CW superconducting linac architecture. The common accelerator physics challenge to be addressed is to determine optimum system configurations such that robust control of collective effects (space charge, coherent and incoherent SR, microbunching) can be achieved with minimal cost.
The proposed Powerful Energy Recovery Linac for Experiments (PERLE) is envisaged to be a three-pass GeV scale machine will act as a test facility for the technology needed for a future Large Hadron Electron Collider (LHeC) project.
The US Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) is the priority project in the US long term nuclear physics plan. The physics case for the collider relies on reaching high luminosities requiring the ion beam be cooled in multiple stages. The machine to deliver this is referred to as the EIC High Energy Electron Cooler.
UK-XFELR refers to an Energy Recovery Linac realisation of the proposed UK X-ray Free Electron Laser facility which is currently in a four year R&D phase.
