Abstract
In broad terms, the project aims to understand the heat transfer and discharge characteristics for honeycomb-labyrinth seals within internal air systems, with particular attention to the honeycomb stator. This will incorporate the assessment of factors such as centrifugal and thermal growth, incursion into the stator and operational parameters through the use of CFD and FEA software to model the seal designs. Both 2D and 3D models will be utilised along with uncoupled and coupled models to discern the physical phenomena within the honeycomb cells. Ultimately, the final deliverable of the project should be to deliver a method of predicting the thermal characteristics of honeycomb cells with consideration of several factors for use in a real engine applications.
