Modelling evaporation, condensation and pattern formation of liquids on surfaces

Abstract
This applied mathematics PhD project involves a new investigation into modelling of liquids on surfaces. The initial focus of the project will be on the evolution of droplets on the surface under the influence of evaporation/condensation and temperature variations. The resulting models will then be extended to incorporate nanoparticles suspended in the liquid and the pattern formation resulting from their deposition on the surface. The student will develop partial-differential-equation (PDE) and kinetic Monte Carlo (KMC) models and analyse them using a range of advanced mathematical techniques. She will be supervised by three Loughborough University academics from the Department of Mathematical Science who have extensive experience in modelling liquids at interfaces. In the course of the PhD, the student will gain expertise in mathematical modelling, numerical and analytical techniques and programming. The student will also receive standard PhD training at the university in presentation, teaching, writing and science communications skills.
