Development of laser stabilisation techniques for fused silica fibres
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Glasgow
Department Name: School of Physics and Astronomy
Abstract
The University of Glasgow leads the development of the fused silica suspensions for the advanced LIGO gravitational wave detectors in the US. As part of the LIGO A+ upgrade (with UK contribution funded by STFC) the fused silica fibre pulling machine at the Hanford site will be upgraded. Part of this upgrade is the implementation of a stabilisation loop based on the temperature of the melt during the pulling process. This will result in fibres with improved strength and dimensional tolerance.
