Motor and Drivetrain Design Optimisation for Light Road Vehicles
Lead Research Organisation:
University College London
Department Name: Mechanical Engineering
Abstract
This project aims to optimise the drivetrain of light road vehicles; for example motorcycles which, in spite of comprising around 20% of the global vehicle fleet have yet to see the advancements in electrification of other classes of vehicle. The project, likely to focus on hub motor design and materials optimisation based on real world drive-cycle requirements , will sit well within the remit of multiple EPSRC priority areas including 'Electrical motors and drives / Electromagnetics', 'Energy storage', and 'Materials for energy applications' and 'Whole energy systems'. The success of this project will lead to a comprehensive investigation into optimisation, adoption and enhancement of electric motors for automotive applications and will directly contribute to ultra-low emission technologies; critical to the target of putting the UK at the forefront of the design and manufacturing of zero-emission vehicles by 2040.
