Abstract
The project aims to elucidate the underlying science underpinning the performance in service of industrial anti-corrosion coatings. This involves structural studies using thin film techniques such as ellipsometry and grazing incidence x-ray scattering of model films made with epoxy resins containing particles such as pigment particles. Studies of free volume will be undertaken using positron annihilation spectroscopy. Studies of the rate of ingress of water and metal ions will be carried out using quartz crystal microbalance and IR microprobe techniques. The results will be interpreted in the light of theory and simulation.
