Description | For this award, to create a model system with three different cell types, we have successfully been able to generate all three cardiac-specific cell types (cardiomyocytes, endothelial cells and cardiac fibroblasts) reproducibly. We have published a methods paper on the generation of endothelial cells. For data processing, we have integrated GSKs data processing software to speed up the data processing at The Univerity of Nottingham. I have also planned in detail the experiments required to create a 2D model system with these 3 cell types integrated together, this is currently taking place at GSK. |
Exploitation Route | We have successfully got funding for another PhD student, working with University of Nottingham, AstraZeneca and GlaxoSmithKline to build on this work, especially surrounding -omnics (metabolomics, transcriptomics, etc...) approaches. Data sets and skills acquired here will be utilised for this project. This model platform could be integrated into GSK's early drug discovery pipeline for cardiotoxicity screening, limiting the reliance on animal models. |

PI Contribution | Our expertise lies in the production of complex in vitro models for use in drug screening and genetic-based cardiovascular diseases. We have expertise in the generation of stem cell-derived cardiac cell types to investigate the impact of drug-induced perturbation of cardiomyocyte function. This collaboration started the integration of our expertise into the GSK system. |
Collaborator Contribution | GSK has expertise in data handling of multiparametric outputs, high-throughput automated workflows and techniques, and access to automation instruments to test a plethora of combinations required for this project. They are also providing training for using automated platforms and the expertise within the team is assisting in the development of this project. |

Results and Impact | We were visited by Animal Free Research UK (Public Affairs Director, Media and PR Manager, Science and Philanthropy Managers, supporters and CEO) as they were keen to promote the research we are doing in the lab environment and what that means for the public. This resulted in a press release targeted at the lay community, strengthing scientific communication. Lillian Greenwood (Nottingham MP) also joined this visit, demonstrating the impact and significance of our work to the council and beyond. |
