Abstract
This original PhD brings to light for the first time the extent and nature of female criminality in Ulster, 1880s-1930s. It offers a unique approach to the exploration of themes such as gender, class, age, and region, and illuminates lived realities for marginalized and criminal women. It draws on extensive and underused archival records, and offers comparisons between Britain, the Irish Free State, and beyond. Women's criminality illuminates the realities of their lives, their social, economic, political and other contexts, their agency and emotions, and their contemporary concerns.
