Abstract

Sleep is a universally conserved process in animals that is essential to life, yet its function and regulation remain poorly understood. By looking at natural variations in human sleep patterns and their associated genetics, it is possible to identify genes that may be involved in regulating aspects of sleep such as sleep duration. Additionally, this same method can be used to assess how the circadian system, the internal biological timing system, regulates sleep.
