exploring the degradation of Li ion batteries under various operating procedures
Lead Research Organisation:
University College London
Department Name: Chemical Engineering
Abstract
The resistance of a commercial Li ion cell varies with state of charge, hinting at the underlying material properties of the cathode that change based on the state of the battery during its cycling. Based on this, new charging protocols will be developed aiming at reducing the stress the materials experience in their cycling and opening up the possibility of fast charging with limited degradation of the batteries. Through a variety of x-ray imaging and spectroscopy techniques, the effect on the material degradation will be compared across the various charging regimes.
