Radical Pedagogies in Community Ceramics
Lead Research Organisation:
Newcastle University
Department Name: Sch of Arts and Cultures
Abstract
This project will investigate emerging models of learning within a growing network of
UK based artists and peer-led community ceramic organisations (CCOs). Within this
research, CCOs are defined as organisations or individuals that use clay as a tool for
transformative learning outside of formal education, challenging notions of ceramics as
an object focused discipline and promoting social change and collectivism. It will
investigate the potential of ceramics within the fields of art education and community
engagement as a radical pedagogical methodology that offers new perspectives on the
socio-economic impacts of creative arts as a community and identity building activity.
