Abstract
This PhD project aims to investigate two therapeutic interventions (mild intermittent hypoxia and mild physiologic stress through exercise) to maintain cognitive function across the lifespan. As the proposed protective mechanisms for the intervention involves similar changes to brain metabolism and cerebrovascular responses, the project will utilise multi-modal imaging techniques (magnetic resonance imaging, transcranial doppler ultrasound and near infrared spectroscopy) to characterise these proposed brain changes, and how these may relate to improvements in cognitive function.
