Abstract
Age-related hearing loss (ARHL), which causes the progressive loss of
hearing sensitivity, is the most common sensory deficit in elderly.
Approximately 14.5M people in the UK (500M worldwide) will be affected by
ARHL by 2030. ARHL is also associated with social isolation, depression and
an increased risk for neurodegenerative diseases. The major obstacle
preventing the development of new treatments for ARHL is a lack of
understanding about why we progressively lose hearing with age.
