Abstract
Electric vehicles (EV) are complicated transportation systems which raise many questions and challenges. One particular area of interest is the on-board charger (OBC) of the vehicle. As the industry is maturing and requirements for the OBC are changing, a solution which combines cost optimization, efficiency, power density, bidirectional operation for V2G (vehicle-to-grid), galvanic isolation, and sustainability is required. A range of topologies are reviewed, with the optimal solution currently seeming as a matrix converter and a dual-active bridge (DAB) cascade with alternate means of modulation.
