Determining the rate of burning in hydrogen flames

Lead Research Organisation: University of Cambridge
Department Name: Engineering

Abstract

Hydrogen is one of the potential chemical storage fuels of the future, as electrolysis costs for renewables come down. Hydrogen can then be used for laminar or turbulent combustors to produce heat and power. The project involves the measurement of the rate of burning in turbulent hydrogen flames as a function of the turbulence in the free stream, using particle image velocimetry. This will involve using current instrumentation for velocity measurements and adapting it for the use of hydrogen and hydrogen-rich mixtures. As a second step, we may consider the development of practical combustors and how to lower the temperatures using water droplets.
