Abstract
The goal of my project is to develop high-quality photon-pair sources in bespoke optical fibre and interface them with quantum memories that can store and retrieve the photons. The project will involve designing and then making photonic crystal fibre in the optical fibre fabrication facilities in Bath. The modelling of the fibre will involve developing analytic and computational skills. I will investigate recent advances in the design of fibres that enable increased performance and reduced noise in the four-wave mixing photon-pair generation process. Having fabricated new fibre, I will measure the quality of the fibres I the photonics laboratories and build the fibre photon pair sources. In addition, I will investigate the role of reflective fibre Bragg gratings in photonic crystal fibre for controlling photon-pair generation; this work will be carried out in collaboration with the University of Southampton. The fibres created will be useful to allow for better quality photon-pair sources to act as a single source for quantum technology. This is useful for quantum communication which is secure as well as the potential for aiding the simulation of pharmaceuticals.
