Abstract
This PhD project aims to open new frontiers in the field acoustic and underwater monitoring by designing and developing a new class high resolution distributed optical fibre sensors. Such sensors use an optical fibre to measure vibrations at tens of thousands individual points along the fibre. Hence, by integrating an optical fibre attached to a flat surface or laid in water, the location of acoustic sources within the medium can be measured.
Such technology has the potential to yield a wealth of new applications in areas such as oceanography, ambient noise analysis, and climate change, to name just a few.
