Abstract
This PhD project is to investigate the formation and evolution of galaxies by exploiting the unique advantages of both observations and numerical simulations. Techniques will be developed and refined to compare simulations to observations, including the radiative post-processing of state-of-the-art cosmological zoom simulations to produce realistic spectra from simulated galaxies. The combination of both approaches could lead to improvements in observation data-processing and give insight to the importance of different physics in numerical simulations .The large amount of data involved in the development and application of these techniques will require cutting-edge data-processing, likely including the use of high-performance computing and machine learning
