Crops & Soil - CRISPR-mediated precision gene editing in algae
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Edinburgh
Department Name: Sch of Biological Sciences
Abstract
The CRISPR technology has recently emerged as a revolutionary tool for gene and genome editing in eukaryotes. It opened new avenues to study gene function and modulate gene expression and has a great potential to improve crops including algae1. However, our knowledge is still limited on CRISPR-mediated sequence-specific DNA integration and replacement, which limits the exploitation of its full potential. This project will explore new strategies for improving precision gene engineering in the model green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and beyond.
Our project will provide the framework to develop core research skills as well as excellent cross-disciplinary research training, including skills in communication and public engagement.
