Rethinking the Senses: Uniting the Philosophy and Neuroscience of Perception
Lead Research Organisation:

Department Name: Inst of Philosophy
Abstract
Our everyday understanding of perception is that our sense organs enable us to see, touch, smell, taste and hear. The vocabulary of five distinct senses ramifies through descriptions of thought ("I see what you mean") emotion ("I was touched by her suffering") and aesthetics ("That's not to my taste"). Traditionally, philosophers have also thought that the five senses producing distinctive, separate conscious experiences. Equally, until recently, scientists have also studied each of the senses in isolation. But modern neuroscience is radically changing our understanding. Each sense organ contains many kinds of sensory receptors (think of all the different feelings from your skin). Everyday experiences - watching a film, eating a meal, walking along the street - involve different senses, working together. But most remarkable is a mass of recent research showing highly specific sensory interactions, in which one sense modifies the experience of another. Imagine listening to a syllable (say /ba/) spoken over and over, while watching a video of someone mouthing a different syllable (say /ga/), you actually hear the sound differently. Equally, the voice of a ventriloquist seems to come from the mouth of a doll some distance away. Somehow, what we see changes what we hear, presumably through processes that normally help us to associate sounds and sights correctly.
Flavour provides the most surprising examples of sensory interaction, What we call the "taste" of food and drink is largely determined by smell rather than taste, but it also depends on the temperature and texture of food and drink, and its colour, and even the sounds that accompany eating. For instance, white noise reduces sensitivity to flavour (the so-called "aircraft food effect"). Equally, your sense of your own body can be changed by what you see and feel. If you look at a model hand being stroked with a brush, while your own hand, out of sight, is simultaneously stroked, you will soon feel that the model hand is part of you. The traditional view that information flows in one direction from basic sensation to perception, memory and action, has also been overturned. Recognising a spoken word, a familiar face, or a favourite piece of music draws on previous knowledge. Perception is influenced by memory, expectation, emotion and attention. Further, since our head, hands and eyes are constantly in motion, the brain must somehow stitch together perception from a sequence of sensory "snapshots".
A comprehensive account of perception needs to begin with the relationships and interactions between the sensory modalities that produce our awareness of the world and of ourselves in it. Although the science of perception is moving very fast, it lacks the conceptual framework that philosophical thinking can bring to understanding the relationship between brain processes and experience. Our plan is for philosophers, psychologists and neuroscientists to work together in entirely new ways, including planning laboratory experiments together, to help us to understand how the brain puts together different sensory information, under the influence of past experience and expectation, to create the seamless flow of conscious experience, to identify objects and events in the world, to give us an sense of our own body, and to enable us to control our actions. We believe that our work will have wide impact beyond our university departments. It will help in the design of new forms of prosthetic devices to help deaf and blind people, and those who suffer untreatable pain, changes in body image or reduction in the sense of smell. It will inform the rapidly advancing technology of enhancement of sensory experience, cast light on the appreciation of the visual and performing arts, and stimulate new forms of preparation and presentation of food, and new understanding of the way in which people choose what products to buy, what works of art they prefer and what food they eat.

Planned Impact
We have identified three main areas in the arts, private sector and clinical studies, where Rethinking the Senses will help practitioners in their efforts to provide audiences, consumers and patients with better sensory experiences. Our longer-term impact agenda is to raise awareness of public and private actors about the importance of multisensory experiences.

Title | Contribution to 'Icelandic Dining Experience' - a multisensory banquet |
Description | This performance event was the idea of two of our collaborators, Dr Tereza Stehlikova, an artist who incorporates multisensory experience in her work - mainly video art - and Charles Michel, a young Colombian chef, who trained in France, and who works on multisensory aspects of the perception of food in the laboratory of Prof Charles Spence in Oxford. The event, which took place in Black's Club in Soho, was inspired by the expedition of William Morris to Iceland and the work of the founder of the Futurist movement and author of The Futurist Cookbook, Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. It consisted of a series of experimental dishes in an extended 'multisensory banquet' (http://www.annabelhuxley.com/blog-1/). |
Type Of Art | Performance (Music, Dance, Drama, etc) |
Year Produced | 2013 |
Impact | This event triggered a continuing collaboration with both Tereza Stehlikova and Charles Michel. We have worked with the multisensory art collective, Sensory Sites, of which Tereza is a member, on exhibitions at GV Art (a gallery that specialises in art related to science) and elsewhere. Charles Michel has done experimental work with Charles Michel and has published on a phenomenon of displaced embodiment (the Butcher's Tongue illusion), which he discovered. |

Title | Full-length documentary on general release - Tim's Vermeer (Sony Pictures) |
Description | Colin Blakemore was the adviser for, and appeared in, Tim's Vermeer, a full-length documentary that went on general release in the USA and the rest of the world early in 2014. The documentary tells the story of an American software developer, Tim Jenison, who wanted to test the hypothesis of Charles Falco and David Hockney (described in Hockney's "Secret Knowledge", 2001) that many artists, from about 1430 until the middle of the nineteenth century used optical devices (concave mirrors, lenses, the camera obscura etc) to create images of scenes, which were somehow transcribed on to the painting surface. The architect, Philip Steadman of UCL, who was also a consultant for the film, published an acclaimed analysis of the work of Johannes Vermeer (Vermeer's Camera, 2010), with powerful evidence that many of his best-known paintings depended on an optical image. Jenison discovered a possible solution to the fundamental missing step in the argument - the way in which the optical image could be directly compared, point by point, with the image being painted, so as to optimise the match of lightness and hue, as well as the correct geometric form of the scene. |
Type Of Art | Film/Video/Animation |
Year Produced | 2014 |
Impact | The film was well-received critically and was shortlisted for an Oscar nomination and nominated for a BAFTA. It has also led to a continuing relationship between the School of Advanced Study, Tim Jenison and the team who made the film. There have been a number of visits by the team to London, to talk to experts in the Warburg Institute as well as in the Centre for the Study of the Senses in the School of Advanced Study. It won the award for Best Original Score in the International Film Music Critics Awards and 3rd place in the Toronto Film Critics Association Awards. It was nominated for prizes by the American Cinema Editors, USA, the Satellite Awards and the Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards. |

Title | Into Darkness & Notes on Blindness |
Description | The Rethinking the Senses team has been giving advice to James Spinney and Peter Middleton, two film-makers who have worked with the production company Archer's Mark. They have made a number of successful short documentaries about blindness, and who are planning a number of other films and audio projects documenting the experiences of people who have lost sensory input. Their successful shorts, Rainfall, Into Darkness and Notes on Blindness, are based on the personal audio records of John Hull, a writer and theologian who lost his sight in 1983. We have advised them on an interesting collaboration with RNIB, planning to give audio recorders to The application focuses around a campaign that takes its inspiration from John's diary. We're developing it in partnership with the RNIB. The concept is to give audio recorders to people worldwide, from all ages and backgrounds, encouraging them to document their experiences of sight loss over the next 2-3 years. These testimonies will become part of a resource that will be released alongside a full-length documentary film in 2017, alongside radio broadcasts. Spinney and Middleton hope to involve other organisations (e.g. Apple and Future Cities) in different aspects of this project. |
Type Of Art | Film/Video/Animation |
Year Produced | 2014 |
Impact | The film RAINFALL won the Best Short Documentary Award at Hot Docs 2013 and was nominated for the ICA Experimental Film Award. The short film NOTES ON BLINDNESS, commissioned by the New York Times, premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival and won the Documentary Award at Encounters Short Film Festival. The project involving the collection of audio diaries from many individuals as they lose their sight is aimed at increasing understanding of the emotional and cognitive experience of blindness, and at developing a resource to help others as they enter the experience of losing sight. |

Title | Lucida |
Description | Colin Blakemore was an adviser for this video, created by video artist, Suki Chan. The video provides a visual metaphorical account of the formation of the image in the human eye and the way in which information is transmitted to the brain. Much of the video was filmed in Senate House, London (the location of the School of Advanced Study and the Senate House Library, University of London). The video included a 24-hour time-lapse sequence of one of the laboratories for sensory research in the Institute of Philosophy, acting as a camera obscura, with an image of the external scene projected on the walls of the laboratory. |
Type Of Art | Film/Video/Animation |
Year Produced | 2016 |
Impact | Lucida has been exhibited at Art Basel Hong Kong; Tintype Gallery, London; Science Gallery, Dublin; Aspex Gallery, Portsmouth; Centre for Contemporary Chinese Art (CFCCA), Manchester; Asia House, London. The creation of Lucida was supported by the Wellcome Trust and Arts Council England. |

Title | Lucida - movie and multimedia exhibition with Suki Chan |
Description | This major art project by Suki Chan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suki_Chan http://www.sukichan.co.uk), supported by the Arts Council and the Wellcome Trust, focuses on the function of the eye and brain in the analysis of visual information. The work being produced includes a full-length movie, based on the chain of events, from the formation of the retinal image and the consequences of eye movements and retinal filtering, to the interpretation of neuronal signals in the visual cortex of the brain. I advised Suki Chan throughout this project, providing scientific information about the structure and function of the retina and the way in which neurons filter information and encode features in the visual world. Part of the filming for Lucida included time-lapse filming inside rooms, each converted into a camera obscura, with a lens mounted in the window black-out. One of these sequences was shot in my laboratory. The work will also include an installation exhibit at Tintype Gallery, including real-time recording of the eye movements of visitors, and display on large screens of reconstructions of the visual information passing through their eyes and entering their brains. I advised on the choice of eye movement recording device and the algorithms of transformation to be applied to images to generate the displays. |

Title | Lucida installation |
Description | This 3-element video installation was created by Suki Chan, based on a research demonstration made by C Blakemore. The installation has three large display screens, linked by high-speed, real-time computer processing, The screens represent the spatio-temporal transformation between the retinal image and the information reaching the visual cortex. A discreetly-placed eye-movement recording device detects the eye movements of anyone who stands in front of the first screen, which displays a static image or some sort, or a moving video. The second screen displays the same image, but inverted (just as the image in the eye is upside-down). Superimposed on the image is a more-or-less accurate display of the optic disc (the blind spot region, where all the nerve fibres of ganglion cells funnel together through a hole in the sclera to form the optic nerve) and the retinal blood vessels that ramify across the surface of the retina. The part of the image that is being fixated by the viewer (i.e. viewed by the fovea of the eye) is displayed at full resolution, but the rest of the image is spatially filtered ('blurred') to mimic the increasing convergence of retinal receptors on to individual ganglion cells moving from fovea into peripheral retina. As the viewer's eyes move, this entire pattern of filtering, together with the blood vessels and optic disc, jumps from feature to feature, exactly copying the movements of the viewer's fixation. The third screen displays the same pattern as on the second screen, but re-centred so that the feature falling in the middle of the viewer's fovea is always at the centre of the screen. Since the eye makes rapid 'saccadic' movements, approximately times per second, the display on the third screen suddenly shifts dramatically at the same frequency. This screen the represents the spatio-temporal pattern of input from the eye to the visual cortex. |

Description | In virtually all respects, we have fulfilled the goals outlined in our application, to this stage in the project. In particular: 1) We have established two, new busy laboratories in the heart of the Institute of Philosophy at the School of Advanced Study, and this has enabled the Institute to attract leading cognitive scientists as visitors and resident fellows (Vittorio Gallese, Chris Frith, Patrick Haggard). 2) We have held a large number of seminars and workshops, as outlined in our application, dealing with a series of topics related to the theme of our grant, including individuation of the senses, binding, attention and action, bodily perception and embodiment, flavour etc. 3) Philosophical work has led to a range of publications, aimed in part at the scientific community, on topics such as the perception of sound, space perception, 'top-down' processing and cognitive penetration, illusions and hallucinations, etc. 4) As planned, there has been a strong emphasis on multisensory interaction in human perception and work (both philosophical and empirical) has been done on such topics as the influence of the sound of actions on gate, the interaction of touch and vision in surface shape perception, the relationship between tone perception and seeing musical instruments, as well as a wide range of effects on the perception of flavour from visual, auditory and tactile information. |
Exploitation Route | We believe that we are contributing to the growing interest in multisensory perception, and especially to interdisciplinary approaches to research. We believe that we are, as we hoped to be, acting as a beacon for the value of interaction between the arts and sciences |

Impact | The review (What is ageing? Can we delay it? (September 2014), pp 66), based on in-depth interviews with experts in bio-gerontology and the biology and ageing, revealed near-consensus on several topics, particularly on the likelihood that average life expectancy will continue to increase gradually, but not indefinitely, and that there is unlikely to be a dramatic increase in longevity as a result of pharmaceutical intervention. The report suggests that major contributions to the increase in 'health expectancy' are more likely to come from behavioural change (e.g. reduction in smoking, more exercise) and public health interventions (screening programmes etc). |

Description | Collaboration with graphic artist Patrick Hughes |
Organisation | Reverspective Ltd. |
Country | United Kingdom |
Sector | Private |
PI Contribution | We are working with Patrick Hughes, an artist who exploits what he calls "reverspective" to create illusory movement in static paintings. This technique involves pitting monocular depth cues (e.g. linear perspective) against binocular (stereo) cues provided by the true shape of the surface on the painting. The phenomenon raises interesting questions about the way in which the visual system normally integrates different cues to 3-D space. We are doing neuroimaging and perceptual experiments, with the aid of Patrick Hughes, who constructs physical stimuli for use in the experiments. |
Collaborator Contribution | Patrick and his studio are not only closely involved in discussing the design of the experiments: they actually construct the stimuli used in this research, including small-scale versions of reverspective constructions that can be presented to volunteers in an MRI scanner. |
Impact | No full publications yet. But we have demonstrated this work at a number of public engagement events, in London and Glasgow. |

Description | Partnership for the creation of Lucida - multimedia project by Suki Chan |
Organisation | Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art (CFCCA) |
Country | United Kingdom |
Sector | Academic/University |
PI Contribution | This major art project by Suki Chan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suki_Chan http://www.sukichan.co.uk), supported by the Arts Council and the Wellcome Trust, focuses on the function of the eye and brain in the analysis of visual information. |
Collaborator Contribution | The discussions with Suki Chan, originally intended to be didactic and unidirectional, became a rich source of thoughts about the nature of the transformation from retinal image to visual experience. some of which have actually generated questions for experimental research. In particular, our discussion about the fact that the shadows on the retinal blood vessels, falling on the photoreceptors, are not normally visible, led to new questions about this phenomenon, challenging conventional explanations. |

PI Contribution | Together with a team of researchers from the Centre for the Study of the Senses, we ran fourteen taste experiments at Tate Modern over four days, called TASTE AT TATE drawing over 1900 participants from the public. This was part of our partnership with Tate Exchange at Tate Modern to bring a new crowd of visitors to the gallery. The experiments collected data and the results are being prepared for publication. There was press attention for this series of events: BBC Radio 4 All in the Mind recorded there and Barry Smith's experiment, Tasting Shapes, was featured in Victoria Moore's wine column in the Telegraph.A second series of events and experiments will take place in March 2018 called Self-Impressions featuring twenty experiments by artists, engineers, philosophers, psychologists, neuroscientists, looking at how we generate sensory experiences and receive feedback from our environment and from others. This is part of Tate Exchange's theme of Production. A third event on Movement took place over a weekend, occupying the 5th floor of the Blavatnik Building at Tate to run a series of experiments and experiences in collaboration with LMU Munich, Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience at UCL, and Studio Olafur Eliasson. |
Collaborator Contribution | Our partners at Tate Exchange provided a large floor space on the firth floor of the Blavatnik Building as well as administrative, organizational and press support to help run these experiments over several days. They provided advertising and staff help to prepare and run these experiments. They produced evaluation of the visitor experience. |
Impact | This was a multidisicplinary collaboration featuring artists, engineers, philosophers, psychologists and neuroscientists. Publications have been produced and submitted and the Getty Institute has asked the team to produce similar experiences and experiments for them in LA. A number of films were made of these events. |

Title | Modulation of the Immune Response and Outcomes in ALS (EU Horizon 2020 MIROCALS Trial) |
Description | In 2015, Colin Blakemore was invited to join the Independent Advisory Board of the MIROCALS project, funded by the EU Horizon 2020 scheme. It is an international, multi-centre trial of Interleukin-2 in the treatment of Motor Neuron Disease (ALS). The aim is to perform a phase-II, placebo-controlled, double blind, randomized clinical trial using low-dose IL-2 to halt ALS disease progression. It will also test the proof of concept that biomarkers can accelerate future intervention studies and provide unique insights on ALS disease pathogenesis, identifying novel target for intervention. The project is coordinated by the hospital of Nimes (France) and involves 11 partners across Europe, a patient's organisation, two CROs for the trial monitoring and biobanking, and a tech transfer company for the EU management. The participating clinical centres are being identified and included in MIROCALS during the course of the project. MIROCALS is funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme under grant agreement n° 633413 and for a duration of 4 years starting 1 September 2015. |

Results and Impact | Action & Awareness Workshop (17-19 March 2016), with James Tresilian (Psychology, Warwick); Elisabeth Pacherie (CNRS, Institut Jean-Nicod); Eraldo Paulesu (Milan); Hong Yu Wong (Tübingen); Joshua Shepherd (Oxford); Gabriella Bottini (Pavia); Frederique de Vignemont (CNRS, Institut Jean-Nicod); Nicholas Holmes (Nottingham); Tom Crowther (Philosophy, Warwick); Günther Knoblich (CEU); Giacomo Novembre (Western Sydney) Rationale: How do awareness and action relate to one another? A prima facie plausible view has it that their connection is limited to the following: conscious perceptual experience guides fine-grained motor movements as well as allowing us to make decisions about whether and how to act; action is a means to altering what we perceive. In contemporary philosophy of perception and perception science there are two movements that seem to pull in opposite directions with respect to this intuition. On the one hand action-oriented theories of perception maintain that the intuition that action is just a means to altering sensory input doesn't go far enough. On the other hand, a body of empirical evidence indicates that visual processing consists of two dissociable streams: one in the service of conscious perceptual experience; the other dedicated to the processing of information for the guidance of motor actions. Recently it has been claimed that the dual systems hypothesis should be extended to include audition and touch. The possibility that there are distinct systems for motor control and for perception in each of vision, audition and touch raises questions about the possibilities for and the limits of cross-modal integration: how can we determine which of these systems is involved in a particular cross-modal interaction, and how might we obtain evidence that an interaction has an impact on perceptual experience? What is more, if we focus only on exteroceptive perception of the world around us, as above-i.e., we take awareness to inform us only about the way the world is-we miss out on the ways in which we come to know about our own and the actions of others through perception, bodily awareness and a sense of agency. Topics to be covered include: • Multisensory integration and perception for action • Multisensory object representation and perceptual activity • The phenomenology of agency • The perception of action & action possibilities • Motor representation and shared agency |

Results and Impact | At this interdisciplinary workshop researchers and practitioners shared diverse expertise relevant to what is at stake when people gather to eat. A tremendously rich set of factors converge in meals, affecting the meaning, pleasures and healthiness of daily life, the transmission and vitality of cultures, and the sustainability and fairness of large-scale food policies and practices. This workshop aimed to integrate our understanding of these factors, with the hope of developing ideas for a 'future of meals' that is well-informed, is ethical and makes the most of meals' experiential, creative and cultural potential. |

Results and Impact | I had a conversation with the leading percussionist, Evelyn Glennie, who is profoundly deaf, about the kinds of perceptual experiences that she has, in front of a large audience at the Cheltenham Science Festival. I demonstrated with various acoustic stimuli, the range of normal auditory sound sensitivity, and Evelyn Glennie played various instruments with active interaction with members of the audience, to show the way in which vibrations that we normally experience as sound can be felt through mechanical sensitivity of the skin and other parts of the body. She also spoke movingly about her experience of increasing deafness in her childhood. |

Results and Impact | Organised the Centre for the Study of Perceptual Experience's contribution to a public engagement event that took place on 6 & 7 June 2015 in the Kelvingrove Museum as part of the Glasgow Science Festival. We had stalls presenting a large number of visual, touch, taste and smell illusions and effects, including Patrick Hughes Reverspectives, the rubber hand illusion, ambiguous smells, testing for supertasters, demonstration of olfactory component in taste, motion illusions, a mirascope, a hyperscope, after-images in different eyes, and so on. We carried out an experiment on the public testing their description of the waterfall illusion. The stalls were manned by ourselves and by various other post-docs and PhD students. Members of the roject also gave talks as part of the festival: Charles Spence on 'The Perfect Meal' and Michael Brady on 'The Value of Suffering' (120 people attended each) on 7 June 2015, and myself and Colin Blakemore on 'Vision, Perception, and Illusion', on 8 June 2015 (240 people attended). After my talk I ran an experiment on the audience investigating their experience of the Waterfall Illusion. |

Results and Impact | The activity consisted of a talk given to the general public as part of the Being Human Festival at Senate House in the University of London. The talk discussed how sound from echolocation and sensory substitution could be used to help blind people navigate, and what the nature of the new perception from sensory substitution is (whether blind people using sound from sensory substitution devices were actually seeing using sound). This was followed by a demonstration allowing members of the public to use electronic sensory substitution devices while blindfolded to detect and navigate around an obstacle in their path, who reported increased knowledge and interest in the use of sound to help those with visual loss explore their environment. |

Results and Impact | Seminar at Glasgow University by William G. Lycan (UNC Chapel Hill): "Propositional" attitudes? With rare exceptions, when philosophers talk about "propositional attitudes," they mean belief. And their views on attitude content in particular are extrapolated from that of belief content. (What could be simpler?: When S believes that P, the content of S's belief is that P.) But in fact, for other attitudes, the respective notions of content vary dramatically. In previous works I have argued this for the case of desire. In the present paper I will look at intending, wishing and wondering, arguing that in each case the relevant notion(s) of content work differently in each case. |

Results and Impact | Seminar presented by Lore Thaler (Psychology, Durham) on Human Echolocation of Contour Shape: Echolocation is the ability to infer spatial information from sound echoes. Humans can echolocate for example by making mouth clicks. There are various examples in the literature showing that humans can use echo-acoustic cues to avoid obstacles, determine object distance or location. In previous work it has also been shown that people can even echolocate shape of objects. Importantly, in the case of 2D contour shape (i.e. triangle, square, vertical rectangle, horizontal rectangle) we have also shown that perception of shape is only possible if people move their head (Milne et al, 2015, APP). In my talk I will describe recent work from our lab that has investigated the possible acoustic features enabling human echolocation of 2D contour-shape. I will also describe predictions about behaviour arising from these acoustic analyses. I will also describe recent work in which we investigated how expectations about object shape affect performance in a contour shape discrimination task. |

Geographic Reach | Regional |
Primary Audience | Postgraduate students |
Results and Impact | Seminar at University of Glasgow by Takuya Niikawa (Chiba): Is radical error in the introspection of phenomenal character possible? In defending naïve realism against the argument from hallucination, William Fish and Heather Logue have argued that naïve realists should be committed to eliminativism about hallucination; hence stating that total and internally perfect hallucinations do not have perceptual phenomenology. This view presupposes the possibility of radical error in the introspection of phenomenal character. In other words, it is possible for a cognitively unimpaired subject (e.g. who is not drunk or does not have Anton's syndrome) to mistakenly judge, via introspection, that she is in a mental state with perceptual phenomenology, even though she is not in such a mental state in reality. Is such a radical introspective error really possible? What theory of introspection should naïve realists hold in order to coherently explain this radical introspective error? In this talk I will argue that in order to give a satisfying account of such radical introspective error, we need to postulate that hallucinations have a certain type of non-perceptual phenomenology such that (1) it is not present in the case of veridical perception, (2) it is contentful, and (3) it is psychologically real. Finally I will conclude that a feeling of reality, a sort of existential feeling, can perhaps meet these three requirements. |

Results and Impact | Seminar at Glasgow University by Anna Sedda (Heriot-Watt University): Rethinking the Body, Rethinking the Brain Human beings show astonishing differences, in personality, memory and attentional skills, and emotional expressions, to name some. However, we all share one feature: we have a unique physical body. This body can be modified in its external appearance (i.e. by changing the skin colour through tanning beds), can be loved or hated, can be used or not by being active sport players or lazy television watchers. In fringe cases, we can also exchange a part of our body with somebody else, as in hand transplantations. Nonetheless, for (almost) all of us, defined features characterize the body, such as the acceptable number of limbs, a skin temperature that we consider normal and the set of movements that we can perform. Regardless, cognitive theories that try to explain how the brain represents this physical body produced a plethora of dichotomic, triadic and even more itemised versions of body representation. During this talk, I will concentrate on recent findings that challenge the idea of a "canonical" body representation divided into components: I will present results on body representation in healthy individuals, patients with spinal cord injuries and individuals suffering from body integrity identity disorder. These results shall convince us that theories on body representation need to apply the Occam razor principle: why decomposing something that works only if united? Importantly, understanding how we represent our bodies could contribute a missing piece to the understanding of how we represent ourselves and could promote a new vision of studying "the brain" instead of its functions singly. |

Results and Impact | Seminar at Glasgow University by William G. Lycan & David Simmons (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill): The intentionality of smell; This paper argues against opponents that smell does represent. Then it defends the Lycan (1996) view of what smell represents, viz., miasmas in the air, against more recent competitors put forward by Clare Batty and Ben Young. It concludes by considering a "layering" thesis: that smell represents commonsensical distal objects and kinds, but only by representing miasmas. |

Results and Impact | Seminar at Glasgow University by Wayne Wu (Carnegie Mellon University): Top-down modulation, cognitive penetration and visual attention While it is well established that there are massive feedback connections in the brain, and hence the circuitry required for top-down modulation on vision, there remains a debate about whether there is cognitive penetration of vision. This talk will discuss the ideas of top-down modulation and cognitive penetration in the context of shifts of visual attention. I begin with an account of what attention is, given some controversy regarding the possibility of even defining it. After discussing conceptual issues about cognitive penetration, I argue that attention provides the best supported example of cognitive penetration: intentions fix attention. This leads to the question whether all top-down modulation counts as cognitive penetration or whether there are other forms of modulation. At the core will be the idea of computational models as explanatory models that can link psychological and neural explanations. |

Form Of Engagement Activity | Participation in an activity, workshop or similar |

Primary Audience | Postgraduate students |
Results and Impact | Seminar at Glasgow University by Alistair Isaac (University of Edinburgh): What is timbre realism? Timbre is that quality of a sound that distinguishes it other than its pitch, loudness, or duration. Historically, it has often been thought of as the auditory analog of colour, that property of surfaces that distinguishes them other than location, orientation, and extent. The analogy between colour and timbre has been (implicitly) exploited in the philosophy of sound to motivate a form of timbre realism apparently analogous to colour physicalism-the view that colours reduce to surface spectral reflectance types. Timbre "physicalism" reduces timbre to the mechanical process types of distal sound-producing events. In this talk, I first offer some background from the psychophysics of timbre to further clarify the analogy between colour and timbre. However, some considerations from the physics of vibrating bodies will lead to the conclusion that timbre "physicalism" is ultimately disanalogous to colour physicalism. Rather, I argue, the reduction of timbres to distal mechanical process types is better understood as a form of ecological realism in the tradition of J. J. Gibson. I conclude with some morals for both the philosophy and the psychology of sound perception. |

Results and Impact | Our everyday understanding of perception is that we see, touch, smell, taste, and hear. Until recently, philosophers and scientists alike have accepted this framework and studied each of the senses in isolation. Psychology and cognitive neuroscience challenge this understanding of sensory perception by indicating that multisensory interactions are the rule rather than the exception. The Spring School will review the latest research on multisensory perception carried out in philosophy, psychology and neuroscience, focusing on the following central themes: Modes and mechanisms of multi sensory interaction; Object perception in & across the senses; Attention, consciousness and top-down processes in multisensory perception; Development of multisensory capabilities; the hidden senses. In order to deliver the state-of-the-art research in these fields, we have invited leading researchers from the fields of experimental and developmental psychology, cognitive neuroscience and philosophy to present their current research on these topics. Speakers include Colin Blakemore (School of Advanced Study, University of London); Andy Bremner (Goldsmiths); Ophelia Deroy (LMU and Centre for the Study of the Senses, University of London); Matthew Longo (Birkbeck); Christophe Lopez (CNRS, Marseille); Fiona Macpherson (Glasgow); Matthew Nudds (Warwick); Brigitte Röder (Hamburg); Barry C. Smith (School of Advanced Study, University of London); Salvador Soto-Faraco (Pompeu-Fabra); Charles Spence (Oxford); Hong Yu Wong (Tübingen); Wayne Wu (Carnegie Mellon); Sharon Zmigrod (Leiden). |

Results and Impact | Colin Blakemore was in conversation with Jenny Tillotson, Reader in Sensory Fashion at Central Saint Martins, chaired by Marina Wallace (who is a member of the Advisory Board of the Rethinking the Senses project). Jenny Tillotson is a Visiting Scholar at the University of Cambridge, an Associate of the British Society of Perfumery, a STEM Ambassador and a Churchill Fellow. She directs the Scentsory Design® initiative, focusing on sensory fashion, merging perfumery with emerging technologies to offer social and therapeutic value in a desirable context. By combining biology with wearable technologies, clothing and jewelry emit evidence-based scents to reduce anxiety via a discreet wearable biofeedback loop when stress levels reach a pre-set threshold. A localised scent cloud is released in response to a biometric stimulus and tailored to fit specific moods., The conversation was about the scientific basis of this area of design, and about many possible applications of multisensory experience to fashion design. There was a lively discussion with the audience, which included many art students and teachers from a variety of disciplines, as well as members of the general public. We have continued our collaboration with Central Saint Martins, which organised this event, and we remain in contact with Jenny Tillotson. |

The illusions are categorised into different types, allowing you to search for, and compare, illusions that fall under one or more type. Staff and students at the Centre for the Study of Perceptual Experience have researched each illusion to provide detailed information about what it teaches us about the philosophy and psychology of perception. The Illusions Index is an open-access resource, intended for use both by the general public and by researchers in the philosophy and psychology of perception, and beyond. The pages for each illusion are stable URLs, so researchers can easily cite illusions in scholarly work by referring to those URLs. The Index is funded by the Centre for the Study of Perceptual Experience, the School of Humanities, and the College of Arts at the University of Glasgow, and by donations from you. All we ask is that you cite the articles in The Illusions Index using the author and citation information indicated beside each article, and conform to the Creative Commons license (CC BY-NC_SA 4.0). The Illusions Index was conceived of by Professor Fiona Macpherson, and designed and developed together with Dr Keith Wilson and Mucky Puddle. |

Results and Impact | Seminar at University of Warwick by Jérôme Dokic (Institut Jean-Nicod) titled 'Metaperception and the senses': Our sensory experiences enable us to form warranted judgments about the sensible world, where the contents of the latter are inherited from the contents of the former. They also enable us to form more sophisticated judgments about some of their non-semantic properties: that they are occurring, that they are cases of vision (as opposed to audition, etc.), that they are cases of faint vision (as opposed to clear or optimal vision), etc. The latter judgments can be formed thanks to the exercises of metaperceptual abilities, some of which being specific to the sensory modality at stake. In this presentation, I enquire into the nature of these abilities, and argue that their outputs are not introspective experiences (quasi-perceptions of non-semantic properties of our experiences), but are best conceived as instances of practical knowledge. In a nutshell, I know that I see (rather than hear, etc.) the world because I know how to improve my visual relation to the world. |
