The Business of Fashion, Textiles and Technology Collaborative R&D Partnership
Lead Research Organisation:
University of the Arts London
Department Name: London College of Fashion
Abstract
The Collaborative Research & Development (R&D) Partnership project will work with the Fashion Textiles and related Technology (FTT) industry in order develop research-led solutions to business growth, technological and consumer change. This will include working closely with small firms who make up the vast majority (80+%) of the sector, in fashion design, designer-making, manufacturing, retail and in related services that are fed by the fashion & textiles sector, e.g. events, interiors, publishing, performing arts, media and other creative services, as well as a wide range of textiles applications in manufacturing, medical and product design.
The research will be delivered by a partnership between several universities led by the University of the Arts London, who together specialise in fashion and textiles design, business, manufacture and marketing, including specialist research centres in sustainable fashion and circular design, sustainable prosperity, materials and textiles manufacturing, in London, Leeds, Loughborough and Cambridge. The R&D project will be based around the East London Fashion & Textiles cluster and the connected production growth corridors of the Thames Gateway and Lea Valley/M11 (London-Cambridge) where opportunities for FTT workspace and manufacturing expansion are evident.
The R&D work programme will include short and longer term research projects and enterprise support with small firms/SMEs to identify and develop solutions to the growth of their business, products and markets and related skills needs; work with larger fashion brands to develop more sustainable products through innovative design, manufacture and waste processing; research consumer experience and needs in material/fashion brands and retailing, including the future place of high street retail, store design and online markets; test new and existing synthetic and natural materials for new product development; and explore markets for more sustainable UK fibres/chemical processes and opportunities for regional UK textile production. The R&D programme, which will be co-designed with FTT companies and industry associations, will also identify the related skill and training needs which accompany the economic and technological challenges facing the FTT industry, and design through the university partners and other training providers (e.g. FE Colleges) and enterprise support organisations, new and novel training and Continuing Professional Development programmes.

Human Perceptions of Recycled Textiles and Circular Fashion: A Systematic Literature Review
in Sustainability
Description | BFTT CRDP awarded £2.9m in funding awards across 35 pioneering SME businesses that place sustainability, innovation and social purpose at the heart of their business. BFTT has raised more than £24m co-investment (£6m via BFTT SMEs, industry and other partners), of which £15m linked to the establishment of the UAL FTTI. including a £3.5million award from AHRC to build a state of the Art Virtual Production Lab - directly related to the work of WP4; engaged with 1,890 businesses; created 36 new products, services or businesses models; provided access to new facilities to more than 50 entrepreneurs; mentored 68 CEOs and senior SME staff; created 53 jobs; placed 28 post-docs/industry equivalent and PhD students in SMEs; employed 25 R&D Project Leads, out of a total of 55 researchers (27 ECRs). The BFTT SME R&D Programme has been a particular strength, providing a template for working with UK and international SMEs. The Programme concept has been repurposed for a number of initiatives including with: the British Council; an EU Horizon consortia proposal in development led by UAL FTTI (Mar 2022), now in it's second phase with further funding for international R&D; a successful EPSRC Digital Economy Network Plus led by Prof. Damian Murphy (XR Stories), York University (commencing Oct 2022); Circular Economy for SMEs with NICER, and a number of other partnership opportunities. Collaboration across the CICP has expanded the potential scope of FTT R&D. Other BFTT work-packages (WPs1-7) across the programme support exploratory research which is moving into completion through the no-cost extension. The R&D work undertaken allowed opportunity for the SME R&D Programme to intersect and vice versus. Led by industry interests, this baseline research is providing fundamental pathways toward ambitious future FTT research, to advance the wider and adjacent FTT related industries. Building on the WP1 BFTT Ecosystem report (publ. Jul 2021), Impact of Covid-19 and Brexit on the FTT Ecosystem (publ. Sept 2023), each of the WPs will publish specialist reports, which will also underpin the work of the UAL Fashion, Textiles and Technology Institute (FTTI), which will be operational in the latter part of 2023. |
Exploitation Route | UAL launched the Fashion, Textiles and Technology Institute to deliver sustainable innovation across the entire fashion, textiles and technology value chain - with co-investment to date of £24m. Originally conceived in the BFTT proposal (back in 2017), the FTTI was envisaged to launch in March 2023 - now due to launch after UAL LCFs move to the new East Bank Stratford campus (Nov 2023). FTTI will ensure continuity of BFTT work, anticipated to achieve a step change in understanding the wider FTT subject field, and potential for UK R&D, supported by a strong transdisciplinary partnerships, enhanced by the development of East Bank as part of the 2012 Olympic legacy at Stratford, East London. |

Description | Economic, social and environmental sustainability is at the core of BFTT supported projects. Examples from across the R&D Partnership include: - A survey and resulting report (Business of Fashion, Textiles & Technology: Mapping the UK Fashion, Textiles and Technology Ecosystem - July 2021) have provided an in-depth understanding of the polycentric nature of the sector and its UK geographical spread with the aim to strongly influence both how the sector is viewed as an economic resource of national importance, and the future allocation of the R&D it needs to access in order to thrive. - The BFTT SME R&D Programme has helped to identify demand for R&D funding and the types of R&D support that FTT SMEs are seeking. 241 FTT business (90% of which micro enterprises) have applied through three UK wide BFTT open calls. Those short-listed through an initial process of expert review, were provided with intensive business mentoring to ensure development of a viable R&D project proposal. 34 companies have gone through this process. 20 R&D funding awards have been made to 27 individual and partner companies between 2019 and 2022. 8 additional companies have been supported through specialist mentoring, small scale feasibility studies, and workshops, for a total of £2.8m across 35 SMEs. - An R&D collaboration with fashion retailer ASOS and three SMEs (Phoebe English, Save Your Wardrobe, Petit Pli) has developed a transformative design methodology that enables businesses to build their own vision of a resilient world and design more sustainable products, services and systems within this. - An R&D collaboration with Virustatic will incentivise sustainable innovation to limit the unsustainable, but legal, proliferation of metal-based chemicals in the worldwide textile and apparel industry as well as other industrial sectors. This will inform the policies around the development of a new standard with sustainability at its core, which would provide fit-for-purpose testing protocols and standards which consider the environmental and ecological externalities of proposed chemicals used in the textile industry. - The launch of the Fashion, Textiles and Technology Institute (Sept 2021) with the aim to deliver sustainable innovation across the entire fashion, textiles and technology value chain, which contributes £35 billion to the British economy every year, while £74 billion+ is spent on wider apparel, clothing accessories, household textiles and carpets, with 890,000 people employed across the UK and £9 billion of export. - A number of collaborations across the Creative Clusters has enabled advanced academic capability toward broader fashion, textiles and technology disciplines (particularly through computing and virtual production) and provided examples of potential researcher excellence and future research growth. - An R&D collaboration with Segure Solution has contributed to the development of a new online platform which aims to make it simpler and more efficient for clothing retailers to work with ethical and environmentally conscious textile and apparel manufacturers across the globe - An R&D collaboration with Kukri Sports to produce of a new garment range using circular synthetics and recycled material, which has resulted in the development of a new capsule range of 50 circular products for a global market (100,000 garments p.a. / circa 10% of total production), which is expected to double the following year. - An R&D collaboration with Keracol and the Victoria & Albert Museum with the aim of evaluating and improving the properties of textiles that may be produced using Regenerated Protein Fibres (RPFs), derived from waste dairy products, chiefly milk, whilst reducing the use of toxic chemicals used during their manufacture. - An R&D collaboration with Blackhorse Lane Ateliers that has made possible the onshoring of the only UK based sustainable denim production (wash and finish), and is contributing to the development of a London denim aesthetic that is sustainable, desirable and distinct. This project is also helping to bridge the future skills gap involving Further Eduction and University students. - An R&D collaboration with Doppelhaus (with Grensons, Samuel Gui Yang, Star Editions), Tengri and Tibor, which is leading development of novel UK wool-based material innovation, increasing demand for this undervalued fibre, whilst providing farmers with increased potential revenue, helping to support the UK farming industry, and minimise waste. - The launch of a New Landscapes: Fashion, Textiles and Technology Catalyst R&D Grant Scheme, in partnership with the British Council to support UK and ODA countries SMEs with innovation in sustainable design and production in fashion, textiles and related technology. |

Title | BFTT Work Package 5: A Systemic Material Innovation Study of the Current State and Future Possibilities for Circular Polyester |
Description | This dataset comprises 18 interviews with 20 individuals considered to be stakeholders in the circular polyester eco-system and experts in terms of their expereince of working with circular polyester at different points in the life cycle. These interviews were conducted as part of an investigation into the barriers to, and opportunities for, achieving Circular Synthetics. Research was funded by Business of Fashion, Textiles and Technology Creative Research & Development Partnership (BFTT CRDP-£5.5 million) led by the University of the Arts London, part of the UK Creative Industries Clusters Programme (CICP) funded by the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund, and delivered by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) on behalf of UK Research and Innovation. To achieve a systemic perspective on the area of investigation researchers co-created an eco-system map from three different perspectives: a sportwear brand (SME), a textile recycling trade organisation, and a regenerative recycler. This provided a techno-economic view of the circular polyester eco-system in the UK, which was needed to meet the overarching goal of supporting SMEs in their transition. This map was used to identify potential research participants. Based on this map participants were selected from the researchers' own networks and those of the existing participants. This initial selection 'snowballed' into a final selection of 20 'industry experts' who each participated in a semi-structured interview around one hour in length. In addition to questions, the interviewer used three canvases to take notes as a way of probing and guiding reflection. The aim was to explore participants' day-to-day encounters with polyester textiles while pursing circular systems, processes, materials and products. This was an important feature of the research, that the real situation being observed by people working in close proximity to polyester would be revealed and challenge common assumptions. During the interviews, researchers probed participants' perspectives on the challenges and opportunities in circular polyester. Participants also took part in mapping life cycles for polyester sports garments, identifying key points on a roadmap to circular synthetics and co-creating a definition for circular synthetics. An analysis was published in Sustainability [see related materials] |

PI Contribution | The collaboration aimed to develop a transformative design methodology that enables businesses to build their own vision of a resilient world and design more sustainable products, services and systems within this. Tools which enable businesses to take agency in the design of future scenarios were co-developed and tested with the three SMEs. These methods were applied to the support of a distinct R&D project led by each business and funded by the BFTT partnership. |
Collaborator Contribution | Co-developing the design innovation tools with these pioneering businesses supports an approach to sustainability that transcends scales of business while it also considers challenges that are unique to different contexts. These learnings were thus applied to an iterated version of the tools used with ASOS |
Impact | Key outcomes and impact: 1.For the SMEs: Each company developed a new aspect or approach to their business, either a new service, supply chain, or extended user feedback. 2.For the research team: A new set of provisional tools and methods for sustainable design innovation through future scenario building was achieved. 3.For the Centre for Sustainable Fashion at UAL and the Centre for Industrial Sustainability at the University of Cambridge: Being able to work with three different SMEs at the same time, and explore synergies from applying tested and untested methodologies, and develop hybrid scenario-led approaches aimed at improving the sustainability of the companies' business models. 4.For future research: New knowledge that can be transferred and applied to companies working at very different scale (e.g. ASOS). |

Title | Co-creation tool within Awaytomars platform |
Description | Fashion company Awaytomars is using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to radically transform the design process. In 2015 the company developed an innovative collaboration platform to prove the concept of crowd participation and co-creation in the design and innovation process. The platform enables users to contribute toward the design process and currently involves a global community of over 15,000 members. By 2019 Awaytomars was keen to take the business to the next level. This required a more sophisticated co-creation tool inside the platform that would allow users to participate in design requests in a more user-friendly and transparent way. The aim was to enable designers from across the globe to share ideas, co-create, track the development of their ideas, and get paid in a more transparent way, tracked by blockchain technology. The main challenge was how to create the structure of this new co-creation tool. |
Type Of Technology | Webtool/Application |
Year Produced | 2021 |
Impact | 1.The project moved up 3 technology readiness levels (TRLs) and now has a functioning interactive and real-time MVP 'Supernova', which is a platform that enables users to experiment with designs, share and work together to develop and create new pieces, thus having the potential to democratize ideas and provide endless creative possibilities. 2.Gaming elements that can be incorporated into the platform have been developed and tested, including a pioneering reward and recognition system that motivates co-creation. 3.Creation of Pitch for investors and interested partners, which has attracted interest from established large-scale design and manufacturing companies 4.The project is currently under review to explore a next phase of R&D investment and collaboration that may involve gaming companies for example. 5.The ATM project has been presented at BEYOND, Edinburgh (poster presented by ECR Project Lead, Dr Shama Rahman, 2019); BEYOND Online (BFTT Fashion Metaverse presentation, 2020); BEYOND, Belfast (Prof. Jane Harris chaired a round table on FTT Virtual Production, 2021). |

This can then be used by a retailer to shortlist and select appropriate suppliers according to the retailer's specific requirements |
Type Of Technology | Webtool/Application |
Year Produced | 2021 |
Impact | BFTT has enabled Segura Solutions to develop an initial framework for the Sustainable Supplier Marketplace (SSM) - a new online platform which aims to make it simpler and more efficient for clothing retailers to work with ethical and environmentally conscious textile and apparel manufacturers across the globe. |
