New ways of seeing, feeling, being: intimate encounters in virtual reality performance
in International Journal of Performance Arts and Digital Media
Title | Boundaries: an immersive Mixed Reality performance for one audience member |
Description | "...we now see that the borders are more permeable than we thought..." Boundaries was an immersive Mixed Reality performance for one audience member. It was developed as part of exploratory research between artist Leonie Rae Gasson, researcher Daisy Abbott, and research programmer Shona Noble. The performance explored mixed reality VR experiences, crossing thresholds, and vulnerability. It was a short, playful experience, lasting 5 - 15 minutes. This project was part of exploratory research into immersive audience experiences using VR, curated by Dr. Harry Robert Wilson, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and supported by National Theatre of Scotland and the Scottish Graduate School for the Arts and Humanities. |

Description | This project funded two early career, post-doc placements. The two projects related to innovation in the creative industries. They each had different aims, objectives and outcomes but the overall scheme aimed to support early career researchers to develop experience of working in partners with an external organisation and supporting the development and delivery of a research project for that organisation. This allowed the researchers to develop additional skills in project management, partnership engagement, impact planning and delivery, developing new networks, working to different time frames attached to the professional creative industry sector etc. Other achievements included: - Contribution to a new digital strategy for National Theatre of Scotland - Skills development and residency opportunities for Scottish theatre artists interested in digital theatre. - Industry experience for the award holder in areas of new work producing, audience and media, programme curation and partnership working. - Experience for the award holder in presenting to diverse audiences - including board members, industry professionals, and theatre audiences. |
Exploitation Route | A report was produced for NTS with a series of recommendations for the future development of digital theatre work within the organisation. Additionally, the relationships and research interests developed by the award holder during the placement are directly contributing to their current research around immersive technologies and intimate performance. |
