Other Countries Partnering Award, South Korea: Genome editing and transgenic technologies for virus-host interaction studies in birds

Lead Research Organisation: The Pirbright Institute
Department Name: Avian Oncogenic Viruses

Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description The major objective of the grant to develop collaboration has been achieved through the initiation of innovative research and by the successful award of the 5 year Royal Society International Research Professorship Award to the two Principal Investigators.
We have also demonstrated that innovative gene editing approaches can be used to induce genetic resistance to avian leukosis virus infections. Having demonstrated genetic resistance to the subgroups A, B and J in cell culture systems, we are now in the process of developing chicken lines. Once genetic resistance of these chicken lines can be demonstrated, we will initiate field studies to confirm this.
Exploitation Route The key findings are being used to generate innovative research in improving genetic resistance to avian diseases
Sectors Agriculture, Food and Drink,Communities and Social Services/Policy,Manufacturing, including Industrial Biotechology

Description The proof of principle of introducing de novo genetic resistance to different avian leukosis viruses through gene editing of specific receptors in cell culture systems demonstrated as part of this grant is currently translated through collaboration with a commercial company to develop disease-resistant chickens. We have filed a patent on the application of this technology in South Korea. Also we are in discussions with poultry breeding companies in China on the potential applications in selective breeding. The findings have helped to secure additional funding from the Royal Society to continue the collaborative work.
