The pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzyme serine palmitoyltransferase (SPT): effects of the small subunits and insights from bacterial mimics of human hLCB2a HSAN1 mutations.
in BioMed research international
Description | We used this UK USA travel grant to build our collaboration with Prof. Teresa Dunn and explore the inhibition of SPT by the inhibitor myriocin. This resulted in the determination of the structure of the SPT:myriocin complex which was published in a high impact paper in JACS 2013. It also led to the award of the BBSRC grant BB/M003493/1 |
Exploitation Route | The structure of the SPT:myriocin complex will help in the development of novel therapeutic agents. |
Sectors | Pharmaceuticals and Medical Biotechnology |
Description | We have been invited to Boston to meet the Deater family who are affected by a mutation in the SPT enzyme we work on.Our work may help devise a therapy. |

Results and Impact | We work on the enzyme SPT. A small number of people are affected by a hereditary diseases - HSAN1. A family affected the Deater family invited us to a meeting in Boston in April 2017 to discuss our research and hear the results of a NIH-funded clinical trial. |
