Description | please see version 1 of this grant. We aimed to understand how the way that cells use fat when dietary nutrient intake is not balanced. We focused our attention on how liver and adipose tissue fat metabolism changes. We identified that both organs change their secretory behaviour to exert distant effects on other organs. We found for the first time that adipose tissue secretes an enzymes known as superoxide dismutase 3 after a high fat diet and that liver cell reduce the secretion of beneficial fats. Finally, we showed that when dietary nutrient intake is not balanced, the gut microbiome becomes less diverse. The gut microbiota are less able to produce metabolically protective fats after a high fat diet. |
Exploitation Route | please see version 1 of this grant there are two new angles to this work. the first lies in the targeting of gut microbiota to improve hepatic mitochondrial function and a paper is in preparation to describe our findings. we anticipate that a future intervention study may be developed to investigate this hypothesis. the second outcome has been realised into new funding through Neutrocure which involves targeting mitochondrial reactive oxygen species metabolism to generate oxylipids and modulate inflammation. |

Description | please see version 1 of this grant report on research fish Through the InClusilver project, I have been in close contact with SMEs and in January 2020, I presented to 30 SMEs in Aarhuus on nutrient imbalance in older adults on health outcomes and the the impact of dietary nutrient imbalance on gut microbiota. In 2020, I was invited to present the findings in a workshop for dietitians and nurses. |

PI Contribution | Several outgoing visits were made by me and my team to XJTU. During visits, we contributed to research programme development, gave lectures/seminars and supported sample collection. We have collaborated on one primary publication and one review article to date. One further primary publication and another review are in preparation. One PhD student who was involved in the collaboration has submitted his PhD and has been appointed as a post-doctoral researcher in Wake Forest, USA. |
Collaborator Contribution | Dr Gao has been exploring the effect of lipids on metabolism in vivo and contributes preclinical and molecular expertise to the partnership. She actively supported the training of a PhD student who as now completed his PhD successfully. |

Results and Impact | The INCluSilver final event - a showcase of innovative start-ups and SMEs from all over Europe with presentations by leading keynote speakers was held in Aarhus, Denmark on January 21-23. At the conference the participants got keen insights into the nutritional challenges for older adults and how companies and knowledge institutions are working together to find solutions. At the conference, the participants were also introduced to new opportunities from the EU's Horizon Europe program. This event was aimed at startups, SMEs and large corporates from all over Europe with an interest in nutrition for the growing silver economy. |

Results and Impact | This presentation request followed on from the Inclusilver symposium in Aarhus on "New knowledge and emerging opportunities for improving elderly nutrition". I was invited to give a lecture for a dedicated group of Health Care Professionals working within the area of disease related malnutrition (primarily dietitians and nurses). the original plan was for an in person symposium but this was instead delivered over zoom. This sparked questions and discussion after and the organisers ran the session again. |
