Gibberellin and miRNA156-targeted SlSBP genes synergistically regulate tomato floral meristem determinacy and ovary patterning

Description | During the visit by PhD students Joao Correa and Leticia Ferigolo, we have transferred expertise in imaging, image analysis and ChIP-seq data analysis to the Brazilian partner. The experiments performed in the UK lab confirmed in a crop species (tomato) a finding that we have previously made in a model plant species: genes that regulate plant height have a previously unanticipated effect on the growing shoot tip, resulting in a change in the number of flowers produced. In the case of tomato, the change also affects fruit size. |
Exploitation Route | Genes that modify fruit size have the potential to be used for crop improvement. The findings will be disseminated primarily through the publicly available scientific literature, but also through direct discussions with representatives of breeding companies. |

Collaborator Contribution | The Brazilian partner gave us access to genetic resources not available in the UK institution and shared expertise in tomato developmental genetics. The collaborative experiments will also allow exploring the relevance of fundamental findings made in my lab to a wider range of crop species. In particular, this will expand the scope of work planned for my lab as part of the BBSRC-funded GEN Institute Strategic Programme Grant. |
