DFW - Designing Future Wheat - Work package 3 (WP3) - Germplasm

Lead Research Organisation: Rothamsted Research
Department Name: Unlisted

Abstract

WP3 will accelerate the discovery and deployment of genes and alleles of high value for breeding, thus maximising impact from discoveries within WP1, WP2, and WISP and 20:20 Wheat. Tangible WP3 outputs for this purpose are referred to as 'toolkits', one composed of pre-breeding germplasm and the other the molecular markers needed to exploit that germplasm. WP3 addresses two topics. The first advances the genetic and genomic characterisation of foundation germplasm. This germplasm, together with the derived segregating populations and associated methodologies, will supply new toolkit genes, alleles, and markers. In the second the new genes, alleles and markers are validated and tested for their value in breeding. This gene discovery funnel produces packages of traits with molecular markers assembled into the two toolkits. WP3 channels new genes and alleles based on the discoveries of DFW and previous wheat programme outputs, into commercial wheat breeding. The breeders' toolkits and associated information will be improved and expanded, for the benefit of breeders and the wider plant community.

Description During the year, we have provided BBSRC with a google.doc site, which lists all DFW outputs (including data access sites, germplasm generated, datasets generated, publications, and public engagement activities). This document is updated on a regular basis. All the objectives during the DFW reporting period have been met, and many exceeded. All the committees within DFW are running including the key data coordination task force (DCTF) and Breeder's toolkit committees, both with WP3 representation.

• The DFW toolkit, including Breeders Toolkit field trialed for performance.
• Inclusion of ten new Rht-1 dwarfing alleles in the Breeder's Toolkit.
• Optimized development of cost-effective phenotyping and phenotypic analysis
Exploitation Route further development of Breeders toolkits

PI Contribution I organised a meeting funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation brought together members of the BBSRC's coordinated wheat programme (Designing Future Wheat) with members of CIMMYT (who breed wheat for the resource poor in the developing world), discuss potential opportunities for interaction. These opportunities are taken forward by writing proposals for Newton , GCRF or IWYP funding calls
