Abstract
Manufacturing automation is an expanding field concerned with the delivery of high-value engineering technologies and services globally. The highest value areas of automation relate to the more difficult to automation applications, for example many occurring in aerospace and precision automotive applications. Industry sources estimate that in a typical aerospace manufacturing plant the costs associated with manual operations and the inspect-adjust-rework activity could cost millions of pounds across the UK. Automation in various forms has the potential to reduce this inefficiency but also has the potential to do great damage to quality if applied incorrectly. Whilst automation has been applied across many sectors of industry, the spectrum of applications has rarely pushed the boundaries of research. Safe and limited solutions are often the norm. The high value manufacturing industries have applied limited automation because of the highly skilled nature of the finishing, inspection and assembly work inherent in the manufacturing processes. These processes are difficult to automate because of minor variation in components that influence interaction between processing equipment and component being processed. In addition, parts are often made from expensive materials, with many parts requiring careful handling in a high added value state (e.g. fan blades). Whilst humans can accommodate variation at certain levels they often introduce variation by virtue of being human (e.g. through lack of concentration). These high value industries need an advanced kind of automation that delivers the precision of computer controlled machinery with the adaptability of a human operator, but with 24/7 capability and 100% quality performance and at reasonable cost and operational speed. When the variation in the product caused by variation in human performance has been removed by deployment of intelligent automated systems, it will be possible to gather better data about design for manufacture and feed this back into product development in a systematic manner.Intelligent Automation is a convergence of human-machine modelling, digital manufacturing, knowledge generation and learning with intelligent devices. The aim is to develop a generic process and product modelling and deployment capability that can radically impact on current limitations experienced within industries that rely on substantial input from human skill, expertise and adaptability. This EPSRC Centre for Innovative Manufacturing in Intelligent Automation will have a platform activity and two closely related and integrated research themes. The platform activity will emphasise 'Fast Track' projects for Early Win outcomes closely linked to the Tier 1 industrial partner expectations. Adventure projects will also be undertaken, aimed at more speculative high risk research. A small amount of Policy and Standards influencing work will be carried out. The first flagship research theme is: Modelling and Deployment for Right First Time Manufacturing, where extensive computer based modelling of intelligent automation systems will be undertaken to establish greater confidence during the design phase through to digital deployment and on to real deployment and operation. The second flagship theme is: Humans and Intelligent Automation Systems, where human skill is examined and how this influences difficult to automate industrial processes/tasks. The area of humans and robots sharing the same work space will also be investigated.
Planned Impact
It is expected that the work of this EPSRC Centre will have a profound effect on the way high value aerospace and automotive industries approach manufacturing. It should also impact on the broad range of UK manufacturing industry and on SMEs within the manufacturing supply chain. The project will create sustainable, knowledge-based employment, which will play a crucial role in safeguarding and developing the UK's manufacturing industry. The exploitation of the Intelligent Automation research results will have the potential to provide a step change in the effectiveness of industry's manufacturing operations. The strongest, short term, impact will be a radical improvement in competitiveness, as the ability to manufacture right first time is a major contributor to meeting the continual business drive for better faster and cheaper products. A subsequent impact, of no less importance, is the ability to substantially enhance the new product introduction process and manufacturing systems design processes through radical improvements to the access to high quality knowledge at key critical decision points in these processes. The EPSRC Centre research will contribute to new understanding of how automation systems (e.g. robots) and humans can share the same work space safely and productively. In this context it is anticipated that the Centre will make contribution to forming new UK standards for workplace design and operation as well as worker health and safety. The enhanced business competitiveness achieved will provide a substantial impact on job security and the potential to not only maintain, but also boost, employment, especially in the provision of high value knowledge centred employees. In addition to the short term benefit to the economy which their enhanced purchasing power will bring a further, perhaps more significant benefit is in the impact of the work on the knowledge economy. The results of the research will counter the shift towards moving manufacturing industry to low wage economies, as real economic value will be achieved through the development of key skills, expertise and knowledge within our highly trained and capable workforce. This is of particular concern to high value manufacturing where control of quality and security is paramount. In addition to the industrial and socio-economic impact the research will also have a strong and sustained academic impact. The new learning gained from the work will help to maintain the UK's world leading status in our areas of research and spawn new ideas for the future advancement of our industrial base and economic growth. A further significant aspect of impact follows from the proposed centres close links with the Manufacturing Technology Centre and the Ford supply chain. These offer clear routes to the rapid industrial development and uptake of the results from the EPSRC Centre, maximising the exploitation potential and providing a highly effective route to taking the results of the work through to industrial production readiness.

Title | Children's Leaflet - Robots and Us |
Description | A leaflet to introduce intelligent automation and the Centre to children between the ages of 7-14 |
Type Of Art | Artwork |
Year Produced | 2016 |
Impact | . |
Description | A range of intelligent manufacturing processes applied to TIG welding, polishing, assembly, inspection, panel forming; all of these have been automated with industrial robots enhanced by specialist mechatronic technology to accommodate component variation with minimal fixturing and robot programming. This approach allows the automation to free up skilled workers for tasks that are just too difficult to automate at realistic costs. The aim is to increase worker productivity leading to increased competitiveness and a stronger UK economy. In addition two new technologies have been progressed from TRl 1 to TRL 3: Electro-Adhesion for low power drain mobile vehicle attachment to hard to access structures; Low cost flexible grippers based around complex geometry realised through direct 3D printing of flexible polymers with integrated sensing - for automated handling of delicate objects. |
Exploitation Route | The results of research are being progressed via the HVM Catapult Manufacturing Technology Centre. However, the funding model for this and other HVM Catapult Centres needs adjustment to focus IUK funding on translational research and development to de-risk the technology created at universities via a linked TRL process to produce industry ready advanced manufacturing equipment to boost UK productivity. |

Impact | ISO 13482:2014 specifies requirements and guidelines for the inherently safe design, protective measures, and information for use of personal care robots, in particular the following three types of personal care robots: mobile servant robot; physical assistant robot; person carrier robot. These robots typically perform tasks to improve the quality of life of intended users, irrespective of age or capability. ISO 13482:2014 describes hazards associated with the use of these robots, and provides requirements to eliminate, or reduce, the risks associated with these hazards to an acceptable level. ISO 13482:2014 covers human-robot physical contact applications. ISO 13482:2014 presents significant hazards and describes how to deal with them for each personal care robot type. ISO 13482:2014 covers robotic devices used in personal care applications, which are treated as personal care robots. ISO 13482:2014 is limited to earthbound robots. ISO 13482:2014 does not apply to: robots travelling faster than 20 km/h robot toys; water-borne robots and flying robots; industrial robots, which are covered in ISO 10218; robots as medical devices; military or public force application robots. The scope of ISO 13482:2014 is limited primarily to human care related hazards but, where appropriate, it includes domestic animals or property (defined as safety-related objects), when the personal care robot is properly installed and maintained and used for its intended purpose or under conditions which can reasonably be foreseen. ISO 13482:2014 is not applicable to robots manufactured prior to its publication date. ISO 13482:2014 deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations or hazardous events as described in Annex A. Attention is drawn to the fact that for hazards related to impact (e.g. due to a collision) no exhaustive and internationally recognized data (e.g. pain or injury limits) exist at the time of publication of ISO 13482:2014. |

Results and Impact | Following, the centre workshop held in the laboratory (here in Loughborough). I have been task to investigate solution and technology such as tracking glove and haptic feedback device that could be used in our current or future research project. After investigation, Pierre Vercruysse contacted me and ask me if we would be interested to see a demo of one of their product, as he was in the country to visit some of their clients at the same period. The meeting was composed of different demos following by a Q&A on the potentiality of their products for our research (without going in too much detail). The next step is for me to inform everyone involved with the workshop of my findings on the different technologies. Finally, this will be presented to industrial partners to develop research project and get funding. |
