Rapid Multiplexed Electronic Detection of Biomarkers for Point-of-Care Diagnostics (eTect)

Lead Research Organisation: University of Leeds
Department Name: Electronic and Electrical Engineering

The applicants have developed a novel technology based on low-cost semiconductor and molecular technologies that is able to detect minute protein traces, enabling rapid in-vitro detection of multiple biomarkers, including disease biomarkers, at low cost and without the need for complicated assays. This disruptive technology has the potential to impact upon a number of large, growing markets. Our technology offers easy-to-use, multiplexed electronic detection of biomarkers and has the potential to be used in hundreds, if not thousands, of diagnostic applications in multiple sectors including healthcare, veterinary, drug development, security and agrotech. More information is available on our website www.etect.co.uk.

Description This grant funded the translation of a previously developed electronic protein biosensor technology into a commercial product. As part of this grant, the biosensor technology was integrated into the commercial partner's existing in vitro diagnostic platform.
Exploitation Route The findings of this grant were taken forward through a number of routes (including the WT/EPSRC funded WELMEC Centre in Medical Engineering) and the technology has now been commercialised via a venture-captial funded University of Leeds spin-out (Relitect Ltd).

Description An electronic, multiplexed, label-free protein sensor technology for clinical diagnostics was further developed. High-sensitivity, reproducible detection of clinically relevant protein biomarkers was demonstrated in full serum through an electrochemical impedance phase-change upon antibody(mimetic)-biomarker binding. The University's venture capital partner IP Group is currently appraising the technology for a university spin-out.
