FinTrust: Trust Engineering for the Financial Industry
Lead Research Organisation:
Newcastle University
Department Name: Sch of Computing
Abstract
The FinTech industry is one of the major growth industries in the United Kingdom. These companies create new, cheaper and faster services, utilizing the latest technologies such as cloud, mobile and blockchain. To succeed they need to gain the trust of customers in a period that society's trust in the financial industry is still impacted by the mortgage crisis almost a decade ago. They need to gain this trust while technologies are changing rapidly and data breaches are continuously in the news. FinTrust will research the issue of trust in FinTech, identifying the generic research challenges and establishing fundamental research results. A particular focus will be on increased automation through the use of machine learning algorithms, which may have implications that affect consumer trust in the new services.
For the first time, research results as derived in FinTrust will be made available as a Trust Engineering Tool Kit, allowing service provider, regulators and consumer organizations to assess levels of trust, quantify the extent to which trust matters to consumers and trust attitude differentiates consumers, assess bias in automated advice, establish whether algorithms may lead to financial exclusion or financial distress and protect services from erroneous algorithmic results. In our work we balance the commercial interest with society's interests, addressing issues such as financial exclusion through algorithmic bias.
FinTrust offers a focused pathway to academic, societal and economic impact. Starting from the co-creation effort with Atom Bank that resulted in the proposal, we grow the Stakeholder Panel to include customer organizations, regulators and other stakeholders. We then establish a joint-up academic community in a FinTech Network, bringing together ICT, EPSRC and other research and intertwine this with existing research networks in finance and business research. We will make the software tools available freely and to a wide audience, training the research staff in interacting and public engagement to optimize the impact from our research.

Planned Impact
The research in FinTrust aims to derive software and management tools for trust engineering in the financial industry, especially focusing on automation through machine learning algorithms . FinTrust delivers a tool kit for assessing human trust, assessing bias of algorithms, and offers approaches to control how socio-technical systems interface with algorithms. Our tools are based on FinTrust's generic research insights and can therefore find application across the industry (even beyond the FinTech industry, although initially this is not the focus of the project and its pathways to impact). The tools will be open source, and downloadable from the web and the data we use will confirm to the policy framework on research data of UK Research Councils. That is, we make all data openly available as quickly and with as few restrictions as possible, realising the commercial constraints that may be posed by our partner Atom Bank.
When co-creating the FinTrust proposal we worked closely with Atom Bank, one of the most prominent FinTech companies in the UK. In the six months of FinTrust we will establish a Stakeholder Panel to broaden the base of interaction, including FinTech companies, regulatory bodies (Financial Conduct Authority) and consumer protection organisations. The stakeholders will collaborate through further co-design of the research approaches, as well as in co-research through participation in the research in human factors and in testing our tools. In this manner, FinTrust will optimize the suitability of its tool for industrial take-up and for functionality that protect the consumer while fulfilling requirements of the regulator.
A specific area of interest in our work is the issue of financial exclusion and financial distress. These have been highlighted as important societal challenges by the House of Lords ('Tackling Financial Exclusion: A country that works for everyone? Report of Session 2016-17', House of Lords Select Committee on Financial Exclusion, 2017) and the Financial Conduct Authority ('Predicting financial distress by predicting unaffordable consumer credit agreements: An applied framework', Financial Conduct Authority Occasional Paper 28, 2017). By interfacing with FCO and consumer organisations we can optimize the tools we develop in terms of avoiding bad loans and, at the same time, financial exclusion.
FinTrust will deliver benefits in terms of raising public awareness over the operations and implications of banking services, including fully automated 'robo-advice'. It will also reach out and discuss with consumers, politicians and other about the implications of automated advice for financial exclusion, distress and consumer trust.
The project will pay particularly close attention to career development if its research associates, through public engagement training, training sessions with our partner Atom Bank, and through involving them intensively with the various network activities FinTrust leads and participates in. We will develop tutorials and presentations for academic and non-academic conferences and meetings, reserving budget for professional developers of presentations materials, flyers and web site.

Description | The main discoveries are bundled in the FinTrust Toolkit. Here we provide some highlights. Overall: Digital banking can pose challenges for citizens, raising vulnerability concerns around trust in banking institutions: branch closures, accessibility of online services, and digital skills and understanding all play a role in the inclusion and participation of people in the digital society. FinTrust investigates digitization and its impact on society. Our Trust Engineering Tool Kit translates understandings and techniques developed through the FinTrust project to help your business to better understand trust and trustworthy systems within the increasing automation of financial services. Vulnerable customers: We found that: • Over 53% of the UK population sit under the four FCA drivers of vulnerability: health, life events, resilience and capabilities1 . • Most technology is not built to adapt to vulnerabilities. • Other forms of digital identity can meet KYC (Know Your Customer) FCA regulations to drive financial inclusion, and can help meet ESG (Environmental Social Governance) and SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) UN directives. Chatbots: Our study found that people were more willing to disclose sensitive financial information such as an account number and sort code to the impersonal "XRO23" system, without humanistic traits. This suggests that socio-emotional features in chatbots designed exclusively for automated financial support have little advantage in FinTech. AI and Fairness: We found that: • People's trust perceptions and beliefs surrounds that an organisation or system is honest, reliable, or safe. • "Trust" means different things to different people. • For engineers and designers, "trustworthiness" is concerned with the "FEAS" properties of machine learning systems: Fairness, Explainability, Auditability and Safety. |

Title | A Dataset of Coordinated Cryptocurrency-Related Social Media Campaigns |
Description | The paper describing this dataset can be found here: Zilius, K., Spiliotopoulos, T., & van Moorsel, A. (2023). A Dataset of Coordinated Cryptocurrency-Related Social Media Campaigns. arXiv, 2301.06601. https://arxiv.org/abs/2301.06601 Abstract The rise in adoption of cryptoassets has brought many new and inexperienced investors in the cryptocurrency space. These investors can be disproportionally influenced by information they receive online, and particularly from social media. This paper presents a dataset of crypto-related bounty events and the users that participate in them. These events coordinate social media campaigns to create artificial "hype" around a crypto project in order to influence the price of its token. The dataset consists of information about 15.8K cross-media bounty events, 185K participants, 10M forum comments and 82M social media URLs collected from the Bounties(Altcoins) subforum of the BitcoinTalk online forum from May 2014 to December 2022. We describe the data collection and the data processing methods employed, we present a basic characterization of the dataset, and we describe potential research opportunities afforded by the dataset across many disciplines. |

Results and Impact | The Durham Leaders Think Tank is a regular space for student leaders and alumni that encourages a forum of debate on current issues, sharing views and insights. They are great opportunities to network with high profile alumni and lead the discussions. I was invited given my profile in relation to the FinTrust project and lecturing on the 'Future of Work' to discuss AI, one of the most talked about and misunderstood topics in the future of work. I will introduce this space and lead breakout rooms with discussions around "How far will AI go in replacing our jobs?" and "How can we harness AI to our advantage in our careers?" As a Durham Alumni, it is rewarding to be asked to speak to students, increasing their curiosity in the topic, specifically, in what the future will hold for their careers in the digital era/economy. |

Results and Impact | This week, Lloyd chats with Dr Karen Elliott, a Senior Lecturer in Enterprise/Innovation at Newcastle University. Karen was voted one of Innovate Finance's #Standout 35 Women in FinTech, and in 2018, she and her colleagues earned a £1.2-million grant to help Atom Bank elevate its FinTech services. In this interview, Lloyd and Karen discuss the future of work, why a strong sense of purpose is the best incentive in the FinTech space, and the unexpected challenges facing emotionally intelligent bots. Plus: how can we stop the next Wirecard before it happens, breaking down the divide between academia and business, and so much more. The purpose was to raise awareness of the FinTrust project - working in the FinTech sector in the North East and as a woman in FinTech. Afterwards, I received enquiries via email, etc. |

Results and Impact | As part of the CDEI's 2019/2020 Work Programme, the CDEI called for input to a Review focusing on Bias in Algorithmic Decision-Making. The Review explores bias in four key sectors: policing, financial services, recruitment and local government. These sectors have been selected because they all involve significant decisions being made about individuals, and have evidence of both a growing uptake of machine learning algorithms and historic bias in human decision-making. The FinTrust Team authored a response and contributed to the Review. |

Results and Impact | This webinar welcomed two speakers to explore the value of design within the many complicated parts of the digital economy. Glenn Smith, Founder and CEO of Roqqett, and Karen Elliott, Newcastle University, have deep experiences from building startups, managing digital transformation projects, and leading a responsible approach to innovation. Glenn and Karen are involved in projects (past and present) that forge new products and services that build value through an integrated approach to design, marketing and an innovative use of technology, but both recognise the challenges in enabling these 'cultures' to work together. Following an introductory talk from Glenn on the need for design (more than ever) to drive the development of data-driven products and services, Karen responded by underlining the need for ethical frameworks that support transparency in a time when design can over simplify the flow of data and hide the bias of algorithms to achieve an easy to use product. The aim was to broaden awareness of co-creation between industry and academia to inform solutions for an equitable digital society. |

Results and Impact | Fintech and the future of financial services (formed part of expert contributors). The past five years have seen an explosion of new financial technologies around the world, supporting the establishment of internet-only banks, the crowdfunding of both consumer lending and small business equity and debt, a range of innovative online and mobile-based payments and far-reaching change in business processes across the banking, insurance, investment advice and other financial services. The UK is a leading centre for these developments. These new technologies have the potential to correct the economic inefficiencies in financial services evident for example in high levels of margins and employee remuneration, all too frequent financial instabilities and the difficulties faced by many households and small businesses in accessing external finance or protecting themselves from risks of financial loss. This impact of these technological developments on financial services is a new area of research. This report identifies four broad research challenges within this new area: • The possibilities for a technology-based restructuring of financial services • The relationship between the new financial technologies and financial regulation • Consumer attitudes to financial services and financial technology • Technology and the governance and co-ordination of financial services The outcome - feeding into ESRC Fintech related research calls/funds. In addition, cited in paper for The Crawford School of Public Policy is the Australian National University's public policy school, serving and influencing Australia, Asia and the Pacific through advanced policy research, graduate and executive education, and policy impact. |

Results and Impact | Invited by the Institute of Hazard, Risk and Resilience (IHRR), Durham University to discuss this topic - the content includes: Public controversies around data misuse and unfairness relative to AI, have focused attention on the risks in organisations adopting AI-enabled technologies for innovation?a socio-technical focus is required. A key criticism of AI is that it is typically a "Black-Box" - therefore requires greater transparency for ethical, moral, and legal risk and regulation decision-making processes. We need to think carefully about such risks: How we implement these algorithms/AI-enabled technologies in practice; The delegation of decisions in the absence of human oversight, and; Consider complexity to manage risk and implementing AI regulation. Catastrophic (predicted) risks of not addressing socio-technical AI. The roles of Explainable AI (XAI) and Corporate Digital Responsibility (CDR). This event is part of a series run by the IHRR by invitation only and receives over 200 attendees. I remained on the call following the presentation to discuss risk with students at Durham University (at their request). |
