Abstract
The UK has fallen significantly behind other countries when it comes to adopting robotics/automation within factories. Collaborative automation, that works directly with people, offers fantastic opportunities for strengthening UK manufacturing and rebuilding the UK economy. It will enable companies to increase productivity, to be more responsive and resilient when facing external pressures (like the Covid-19 pandemic) to protect jobs and to grow.
To enable confident investment in automation, we need to overcome current fundamental barriers. Automation needs to be easier to set up and use, more capable to deal with complex tasks, more flexible in what it can do, and developed to safely and intuitively collaborate in a way that is welcomed by existing workers and wider society.
To overcome these barriers, the ISCF Research Centre in Smart, Collaborative Robotics (CESCIR) has worked with industry to identify four priority areas for research: Collaboration, Autonomy, Simplicity, Acceptance. The initial programme will tackle current fundamental challenges in each of these areas and develop testbeds for demonstration of results. Over the course of the programme, CESCIR will also conduct responsive research, rapidly testing new ideas to solve real world manufacturing automation challenges.
CESCIR will create a network of academia and industry, connecting stakeholders, identifying challenges/opportunities, reviewing progress and sharing results. Open access models and data will enable wider academia to further explore the latest scientific advances. Within the manufacturing industry, large enterprises will benefit as automation can be brought into traditionally manual production processes. Similarly, better accessibility and agility will allow more Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) to benefit from automation, improving their competitiveness within the global market.

| Title | Source code for the Morphing Gaussian Random Field methodology - for robotic/cobotic assembly cell simulaitons |
| Description | The source-code and data to reproduce the developed Morphing Gaussian Random Field (MGRF) methodology can be accessed online. Morphing Gaussian Random Field (MGRF) methodology for object shape error modelling and simulation in Robotic/cobotic assembly cells. The MGRF methodology models the spatial correlation in the deviations of the part from its nominal design using Gaussian Random Fields and then, utilises the modelled spatial correlations to generate non-ideal parts by conditional simulations. The MGRF methodology has (i) high defect fidelity enabling it to simulate various part defects including local and global deformations, and technological patterns; (ii) high data versatility allowing it to simulate non-ideal parts under the constraint of limited data availability and to utilise historical non-ideal part data of similar parts; (iii) designer centric capabilities such as performing 'what if?' analysis of defects of practical importance; and; (iv) the ability to generate non-ideal parts conforming to statistical form tolerance specification without additional modelling effort. |

| Impact | Object Shape Error Modelling and Simulation (OSEMS) plays a vital role in determining the quality and functionality of mechanical products and their assembly systems. Shape error arises due to various inevitable uncertainties in manufacturing processes which lead to the actual manufactured part exhibiting imperfect form, i.e., having geometric and dimensional errors. A model of the resulting true manufactured part with geometric and dimensional errors is called a 'non-ideal part'. This models is important for modelling and simulating assembly processes with a goal of achieving 'zero-defects' production (important for e-mobility manufacturing) as well as for ' Right-First-Time' design. The work is being explored for development of digital twin which will be implemented for robotic/cobotic assembly cells with capabilities for: (1) Dexterous parts: (i) non-rigid; (ii) non-ideal; (iii) shape variants (2) Scalable: Capability to Simulate V-model to be used in in NPI for volume/variant change. KPI Measure: Right-First-Time (RFT) (3) Resilient: Capability for defect RCA: (i) detection; (ii) prediction; (ii) repair. KPI Measure: Near-zero-defects (n-ZD) / mean-time-to-detection/repair (4) Transverse Human-Robot collaborative (HRC) modes: (i) proximal collaboration /distal collaboration; (ii) synchronous collaboration/asynchronous collaboration. KPI Measure: Degree of Collaboration / Degree of Involvement |

| Organisation | Expert Tooling & Automation Ltd |
| Country | United Kingdom |
| Sector | Private |
| PI Contribution | Industry challenge materialised from a workshop in 2023. Industry challenge: An automated way of spreading various pastes on surfaces. Pastes can be defined as liquid substances with suspended solid particles. Their mechanical properties vary with applied force. Food spreads are a good representative for this category as they introduce uncertainties in chunkiness and viscosity. The ability to spread food items on surfaces like bread would likely be transferable not just to other food products, but also across industry in the spreading of any paste (e.g., cements, coatings, textiles, adhesives) onto a wide variety of surfaces. Researchers developed digital twin of new manipulation methods for tools that interact with difficult materials like pastes, etc |
| Collaborator Contribution | Partners have regular update meetings to review workplan and to review if an automation system can spread paste-like substance (with uncertain material properties and composition) evenly and delicately across an uncertain surface. Staff time, access to premises and provision of a conveyor belt. |
| Impact | this is a sensitive feasibility study and will be reported in the future |

| PI Contribution | As a Researcher in Residence (April 2024 - April 2026), my contributions to this collaboration have been focused on robot calibration on the network and Factory 2050 cloud infrastructure, with the goal of pushing these advancements towards industrial standards. My work integrates real-time robotic calibration, digital twin technologies, and AI-driven automation, ensuring that robotic systems achieve higher precision, repeatability, and adaptability for advanced manufacturing applications. A key aspect of my contribution has been the development and deployment of a networked calibration framework, allowing robots across Factory 2050 and connected industrial facilities to self-calibrate in real-time. This involves leveraging cloud-based digital twins, AI-driven sensor fusion, and machine learning algorithms to continuously refine robotic accuracy. The integration of real-time data analytics and predictive maintenance ensures that robotic systems can adapt dynamically to changes in the manufacturing environment, reducing downtime and improving efficiency. Beyond technical development, I have led efforts to standardize robotic calibration protocols, working closely with industrial partners, research institutions, and policy-makers to ensure that these innovations align with international manufacturing and automation standards. This includes engaging with standardization bodies and contributing to guidelines for networked robotic calibration, positioning Cranfield University as a leader in AI-driven robotic standardization and industrial automation. Additionally, I have facilitated collaborations with key stakeholders, including AMRC Factory 2050, Airbus, and the ROS-Industrial Consortium, ensuring that our research translates into industry-wide best practices. By securing funding for joint research initiatives and organizing knowledge-sharing workshops, I am actively driving the adoption of cloud-based robotic calibration as a standardized industrial solution, further reinforcing Cranfield's leadership in intelligent automation and digital manufacturing. |
