Reclaiming Forgotten Cities - Turning cities from vulnerable spaces to healthy places for people [RECLAIM]
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Surrey
Department Name: Civil and Environmental Engineering
Abstract
RECLAIM is an innovative network to address complex problems and create sustainable, healthy, and liveable urban systems, resilient to climate-related hazards. RECLAIM will become an inclusive platform for continual exchange, and knowledge translation. Our network will connect and transform the 'forgotten cities' to be at the vanguard for environmental and economic advancement using participatory methods and green-blue-grey infrastructure (GBGI) to address societal and environmental challenges.
Our vision for RECLAIM is to create a multidisciplinary and cross-sectoral network, which brings together multiple areas of scientific expertise (engineering, ecology, social science), artists, designers, business, city authorities, policymakers and community groups. RECLAIM will act as a hub to rapidly disseminate best practice on GBGI design which takes account of the social and economic context, and the needs of local residents as well as the latest scientific evidence on designing multi-functional GBGI solutions. The network will develop common language, goals and methodology to ease the communication, spreading, and replicability of GBGI. It will focus on the forgotten cities, especially the smaller and/or economically disadvantaged urban areas and communities which have mostly been ignored in the implementation and assessment of GBGI, and making them part of the solution using a participatory approach. The geographical scope is pan-UK, covering some larger cities where good practice is already established (e.g. Liverpool, Glasgow, Newcastle) with smaller cities and less well-off areas in the northeast of England, north Wales, the Midlands and south-east England to test, co-design, engage and learn with their most disadvantaged communities. Disciplinary scope aims to bridge engineering, modelling, atmospheric chemistry, hydrology including marine, green infrastructure, urban art, urban design, and social sciences including science and technology studies.
The network has a central aim of addressing the levelling up agenda by incorporating both social justice issues and ecological quality into the design of multi-functional grey, green and blue space in cities, proposed as the means to ensure liveable cities which are sustainable and resilient to the future challenges. It will tackle this through six key objectives, which are delivered through a series of network actions: 1) Build a new multi-disciplinary network to share best practice and act as research leaders; 2) Undertake horizon scanning and knowledge synthesis to identify key gaps in knowledge and make recommendations to address them; 3) Conduct feasibility studies to comprehensively assess new and existing GBGI, and to address knowledge gaps; 4) Design, engage and learn with the public, fostering improved understanding of the wider benefits of green-blue-grey space, and educating the next generation on making our cities more sustainable and healthier places to live; 5) Train a new cohort of decision-makers and academics to embed multi-disciplinary thinking into future GBGI design, incorporating a mix of place-based approaches and scale-appropriate functional interventions; 6) Accelerate uptake of best practices by dissemination through activities designed to share best practice on urban planning and green and blue space design.
Underlying this are four cross-cutting themes which thread through all the network activities: Multifunctionality and systems thinking, Embedding aesthetics and people's needs into GBGI design, Upscaling and outscaling, and Capitalising on existing initiatives.

Results and Impact | What can we learn from our experiences of heat waves and what are the implications for creating and managing heat-resilient treescapes for the future? These were the questions posed at this week's event organised by the Trees and Design Action Group (TDAG) which took place online and in person in Birmingham. It was jointly delivered by TDAG, the RECLAIM network, Myerscough College and The Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR). |

Results and Impact | A new project involving the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) will support Britain's towns and cities as they adapt to the impacts of climate change. The initiative, bringing together experts in a range of disciplines, aims to 'reclaim forgotten cities', and particularly focus on areas with severe pockets of deprivation or which have not traditionally received investment for research and innovation. |

Results and Impact | A UK survey has shown significant public support for more nature in their towns and cities. The poll of 1,866 people, by Bangor University and the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH), showed that 75% of people wanted more wildflower meadows in their urban areas and 73% were in favour of more trees. The survey was carried out in partnership with Denbighshire County Council to understand whether UK-wide perceptions were different from the local community's views about tree planting and new wildflower meadows established by the council in Rhyl, North Wales. In fact, the views of local residents were more positive than the national average. UKCEH scientists conducted modelling studies to calculate the improvements in noise, carbon and air pollution resulting from the schemes. |

Results and Impact | As part of the SRI's role on the ERDF-funded business support programme, the ARENA project, we provided support to a company interested in exploring the potential for domestic garden design and certain planting schemes to help combat different air pollutants, and the influence on local air quality for households and local neighbourhoods. Air pollution is a major environmental health hazard, both for humans and biodiversity, and a leading environmental cause of human mortality and premature death worldwide (WHO, 2016) |

Results and Impact | We are thrilled to update you on the Clean Air Garden project, which we introduced in our blog article back in April 2023 (click here to read). We have identified a number of suitable sites in London with poor air quality and have recruited participants with suitable gardens, so our study is now underway! This past summer, the SRI team took to the streets of Barking and Dagenham, Tower Hamlets, and Enfield boroughs, leafleting and seeking out willing participants with domestic gardens that matched the design requirements of our study. |

Results and Impact | This inter-disciplinary project is funded by the RECLAIM Network Plus and aims to explore the benefits of green, blue and grey infrastructure (GBGI) for reducing inequalities in quality of life. The research team are based at the University of the West of England (UWE) in Bristol. We are working with Bristol City Council to access data from the annual Quality of Life Survey for 2011-2022. This data set includes up to 190 indicators of quality of life and wellbeing of residents in Bristol. By using Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to map green, blue and grey infrastructure across the city to these outcomes, we aim to better understand the importance of these features for improving people's lives and reducing inequalities within neighbourhoods and across the city. |

Results and Impact | After hopping over a few technical and administrative hurdles earlier in the year, all of our project sensor installations were completed by April, well in time for our recent (unofficial!) heatwave. It's somewhat sad that I get way more excited about the data coming in than the beginning of summertime these days! It is however great to start seeing the impact our small urban parks can have on the localised microclimate, and the pleasant conditions they create for us all. |
