AI UK: Creating an International Ecosystem for Responsible AI Research and Innovation
Lead Research Organisation:
University of Southampton
Department Name: Sch of Electronics and Computer Sci
Abstract
Artificial Intelligence (AI) can have dramatic effects on industrial sectors and societies (e.g., Generative AI, facial recognition, autonomous vehicles). AI UK will pioneer a reflective, inclusive approach to responsible AI development that does not ignore AI's potential harms but acknowledges, understands and mitigates them for diverse societies. AI UK adopts a strong human-centred approach to ensure societies deploy and use AI in a responsible way by providing the AI community with a toolkit of technological innovations, case studies, guidelines, policies and frameworks for all key sectors of the economy. To achieve this, AI UK will deliver and drive a collaborative ecosystem of researchers, industry, policymakers and stakeholders that will be responsive to the needs of society, led by a team of experienced, well-connected leaders from all four nations of the UK, committed to an inclusive approach to the management of the programme.
AI UK grows an interdisciplinary ecosystem that adopts Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI), Trusted Research, and Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) as fundamental principles. AI UK will champion a research culture where everyone is respected, valued and able to contribute and benefit and coordinate the UK's AI research networks and programmes, working with key Research Council (and other funding) programmes, The Alan Turing Institute, The Ada Lovelace Institute, AI Standards hub, Centres for Doctoral Training, UKRI AI Research Hubs, Public Sector Research Establishments (PSREs) as well as the wider landscape of university-based Responsible/Ethical AI research institutes. AI UK will connect UK research to internationally leading research centres and institutions around the world. Ultimately, through this ecosystem, AI UK will deliver world-leading best practices for the design, evaluation, regulation and operation of AI-systems that benefit the nation and society. AI UK will invest in the following strands:
Ecosystem Creation and Management: to define the portfolio of thematic areas, translational activities, and strategic partnerships with academia, business and government and associated impact metrics. This will broaden and consolidate the network nationally and internationally and identify course corrections to national policy (e.g., industrial strategy).
Research & Innovation Programmes: to deliver consortia-led research that address fundamental challenges with multi-disciplinary and industrial perspectives, integrative research projects that link connected and established research teams across the community, and early stage and industry-led research and innovation projects to expand the UK's ecosystem and develop the next generation of leaders.
Skills Programme: to translate research into skills frameworks and training for users, customers, and developers of AI, and to contribute to the call for the UK AI Strategy's Online Academy.
Public and Policy Engagement: working with the network of policy makers, regulators, and key stakeholders to respond to arising concerns, need for new standards, build capacity for public accountability and provide evidence-based advice to the public and policymakers.

Results and Impact | It is vital to address the gender disparities and exclusions that persist within the field of AI, acknowledging the critical role that gender diversity plays in ensuring the responsible design, development, implementation and use of AI. We must move beyond potential and rhetoric, and take further tangible and transformative action towards gender equity in AI. This event brings together EDI experts, artists, industry innovators and gender advocates to share their experience and to propose provocations to spark discussion. Participants will have an opportunity to engage in group discussions surrounding these provocations and to explore concrete actions we can foster and support within the Responsible AI UK ecosystem. |

Results and Impact | Monday, October 23 2023 In the early days of World War II, the British Service repurposed mansions at Bletchley Park to house a large team of codebreakers. These individuals, mainly academics, used an early form of artificial intelligence to break German code and in so doing, protect the British people. Some 80 years later, the UK government announced it would host the first international summit on AI Safety at Bletchley Park on November 1-2 UK officials stated that they had identified two very broad types of AI risks- misuse (as example using AI to cause chaos or harm) and loss of control risks. Some NGOs criticised the planners for not focusing on more immediate risks to individuals. In this webinar, our three speakers will examine if these are the most important and immediate risks; what risks should be the central concerns of policymakers, and what are the best regulatory policies to mitigate such risks. The moderator will discuss these issues for the first 30 minutes and the next 30 will be open to audience questions. Speakers: -Gina Neff, Professor and Director, Minderoo Centre for Technology and Democracy, University of Cambridge - Katie Shilton, Associate Professor Information Science, University of Maryland -Tom Goldstein, Professor and Director of Center for Machine Learning, University of Maryland Moderator: -Susan Ariel Aaronson, Research Professor and Director, Digital Trade and Data Governance Hub, GWU |

Results and Impact | We organised the workshop to bring together experts from academia, government, and industry to establish connections and form groups for future research projects centered around the use of UAVs. The workshop was organised as part of the EPSRC Autonomy Project on Smart Solutions Towards Cellular-Connected Unmanned Aerial Vehicles System (EP/W004364/1). The workshop was organised by Dr Ayodeji O. Abioye, Dr Sergio A. Araujo-Estrada, and Dr Mohammad D. Soorati with the support of Prof Jim Scanlan and Prof Gopal Ramchurn. The "Future of UAVs: towards trustworthy applications and development tools" workshop was a national event hosted at the University of Southampton, on Monday 20th November 2023, 09:30 - 16:30 Hrs (BST). We invited four speakers to kick start the roundtable sessions with the talks on "Future UAVs" by Prof Jim Scanlan (SOTON UAV), "Trustworthy & Responsible use of AI" by Prof Gopal Ramchurn (TAS Hub and RAI UK), "Future Industry Applications of UAVs" by Prof Henry Tse (Connected Places Catapult), and "Public perception and ethical concerns on using drones" by Prof Christian Enemark (DRONETHICS). The event had three round table sessions to discuss novel applications of UAVs, as well as the ethical use, and development tools. The discussion was guided around themes ranging from agile economy (e.g. parcel delivery), emergency response (e.g. medical delivery), and environment monitoring. New ideas for potential future applications, such as long-range drones with perch and recharge capability, were identified. Areas for future research and funding such as the development of an all-weather drone and better airspace management were also discussed. Attendees were able to expand their network for future collaborations. |

Results and Impact | It has been a little over a year since ChatGPT burst onto the world. This high exposure of Generative AI has forced universities to reflect upon and rethink many aspects of the way they teach and assess. Building on AI research, innovation and deployment which stretches over many decades, since the beginning of 2023 we have been exploring the potential of Generative AI to aid in OU teaching and learning. In this talk I will report on early results, including proof of concepts in the areas of content generation and digital assistants for students, the views of our students on these technologies, and outline possible future directions. |
