Description | This is a collaborative project between universities of Leeds, Newcastle and Ulster. Through the project, we (Leeds team) developed, for the first time, a cryogenic energy storage system using carbon dioxide as the storage medium - an extension of the famous liquid air energy storage technology, built a lab scale demonstration unit and tested the performance of the system. The system operates at a pressure between 10bar and up to 70 bars to prevent the formation of solid particles. We have also built a single cylinder (~5kW) and a multiple cylinder (~15kW) piston engines for the system and also associated control programme. The demonstration system is substantial piece of kit, which has been used not only as a means for testing the performance of the system, but also for further research in cold storage materials, cold storage devices and system integration and optimisation. |
Exploitation Route | The route for the findings to be used was defined at the beginning of the project, namely to disseminate to industry as well as to publish through academic papers. The work has led to a number of publications and substantial subsequent projects from e.g. Air Products, Highview Power Storage, Royal Academy of Engineering, SGRI and CRRC etc. The work has also led to two sets of engines being sold to an overseas research organisation to use as research engines in their thermal energy storage system. |

Description | The work is closely related to the well-known liquid air energy storage technology (LAES) invented by my team some 15 years ago when I was in Leeds. It has been found that a large scale (>15-25MW) standalone LAES system has a round trip efficiency ~60% and the efficiency drops substantially when the system is below some 1MW. The knowledge and experience gained from the project have been used to improve the efficiency of small scale LAES system. Over the last two years, new approaches have been devised for enhancing the round trip efficiency of LAES for small scale systems (hundreds of kWs). It was also discovered that compression heat cannot be effectively used in the current process and hence the invention of a new combined heating, cooling and power technology. In addition, the engines developed through the projects and associated control and monitoring programmes are potential products, awaiting further commercial development. |
