An experimental and numerical investigation of frictional losses and film thickness for four cylinder liner variants for a heavy duty diesel engine
in Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part J: Journal of Engineering Tribology
Description | We have for the first time measured the oil films that form in a automotive engine cylinder. We should that oil films of the order of a few microns form between the position rings and the liner and the shirt and the liner. We were able to show how the piston moves within the cylinder and how secondary motion occurs. his secondary motion is the source of energy losses in the engine. |
Exploitation Route | This new measurement method can be used by automotive engine developers to assess engine performance. |

Description | Data recorded during the project usig the novel measurement methods was used by Ricardo to validate their commercial PISDYN code. PISDYN is a commercial software sold by Ricardo Ltd. It is used to design piston/ring systems for autoengines. We measured oil films in a fired engine and produced a databank of oil film thickness at the rings, skirt, and pisotn secondary motion. This data was supplied to Ricardo who modelled the same engine and used this as a validation excercise. Beneficiaries: Ricardo Ltd Contribution Method: Improved sotware code, increased confidence in software and hence ommercially more valuable product. Measurement methods have been applied to large size marine diesel engines with WinGD (Wartsila). Experiments on their marine engine test bed RX8 have been used to identify the effects of lubricant supply system on poison ring oil film thickness. |
