Abstract

Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description That small cells and cell densification in radio access networks helps to save energy consumption while growing capacity. That the salient energy and capacity metrics in radio access networks are area averaged power, area averaged throughput and their product.
Exploitation Route Findings can be used to design future radio access networks such as LTE-Advanced (4G). Findings directly support and initiate research into 5G radio access networks.

Title VCE System Level Simulator (VCEsim)
Description As part of the Green Radio project, a system level simulator for modelling the performance of multi-user, multi-cell LTE radio access networks was developed. The software was used to evaluate the energy efficiency of techniques developed by researchers across Bristol, Edinburgh, KCL and Sheffield to established an integrated energy solution. The software was made available in open source form to the member companies of MVCE and the partner Universities.
Type Of Technology Software
Year Produced 2012
Open Source License? Yes
Impact To inform industry and the academic community of the energy saving potential of small cell and Het Net deployments in 4G networks. The outputs have directly fed the research agenda in 5G where cell densification is a major strategy to both in crease capacity whilst saving energy. Results and Impact This was a plenary speech given at the Third ETSI Workshop on ICT Energy Efficiency and Environmental Sustainability, 3-5 June 2015, Sophia-Antipolis, France. The talk continued to develop the theme of a joint energy and data volume metric for quantifying the energy efficiency of communication networks. The talk was directly relevant to ETSI's developing standard in energy efficiency measurements for wireless communication networks (ETSI ES 203228).

Results and Impact This was an invited presentation on the theory and use of energy metrics developed in the Green Radio Project. The talk introduced the new concept of a joint metric based on energy efficiency and data volume efficiency, which when combined explained the behaviour of the frequently used bit/Joule metric used to assess energy efficiency in communication networks. The important contribution is that by itself, the bit/Joule metric is ambiguous as to whether or not savings are obtained through energy reduction or increases in data throughput. The new metric evaluation framework resolves this ambiguity by correctly accounting for energy savings and throughput gains.
