Abstract
Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description | We have developed the apparatus and capabilities to study very low temperature reactions between neutral molecules and ions, including molecules that are selectively deuterated (molecules with one or more deuterium atoms substituted for hydrogen). We have developed techniques to measure the ratio of products of different types from complex reactions and the rates of those processes. A study of the reaction of xenon ions with isotopomers of ammonia revealed a remarkable inverse isotope effect (Nature Communications 2020) We have also developed a device for making cold free radicals (species with an odd number of electrons) - a Zeeman decelerator - for future applications in cold chemical reaction studies. |
Exploitation Route | The development of novel mass spectrometric techniques, ejecting ions from laser cooled ion trap, could be of value in analytical chemistry. |
