Singularities of Geometric Partial Differential Equations
Lead Research Organisation:

Department Name: Mathematics
Abstract
This proposal sits within a field of great scope, stretching from some of the most fundamental problems in physics, to current practical issues in engineering, to some of the most powerful modern techniques in topology and geometry. Although these topics are all very different, it has become apparent that many of the biggest future developments in each area will require overcoming key research challenges that are remarkably similar. It is these challenges that we will address in this proposed research.
At the heart of each of the topics above lie Geometric Partial Differential Equations (PDE). Each of these equations could be perhaps a law of physics, or an equation modelling an industrial process, or more abstractly, a rule under which a geometric object can be processed in order to improve it. Smooth solutions to Geometric PDE have been extremely successful in applications to pure and applied problems, but the equations are generally nonlinear, and it is therefore typical that singularities will occur in solutions. The next generation of applications, with extensive potential impact, require us to transform our understanding of these singularities that develop. We must understand when and why they occur, their structure and stability, and how they encode what the PDE is doing. We must analyse to what extent they break the classical theory of smooth solutions, and what effects this has. These are the main challenges of this proposal, and we have compiled a team to address them with complementary expertise in singularity analysis and experience of applying geometric PDE across subjects such as Mathematical Relativity, Geometric Flows and Minimal Surfaces.
In Mathematical Relativity, one sees singularities in solutions of the Einstein equations, first written down by Einstein in 1915 as the fundamental equations of the large-scale universe. Progress in the research challenges we propose will have potentially major impact in some of the most famous open problems in this field such as the Cosmic Censorship Conjectures, and the Black Hole Stability Problem.
We also find singularities in the field of Geometric Flows, by which we mean the evolution equations of `parabolic' type that are currently being so successful in applications to geometry, topology and engineering, and in modelling phenomena in physics and biology. The most famous application in recent years has been the resolution of the Poincaré conjecture, which was named by the journal `Science' as the scientific `Breakthrough of the year, 2006,' but is considered by many to be the greatest achievement of mathematics in the past 100 years. The research challenges we propose are central to future applications of these equations, whether we are using them to classify manifolds with a certain curvature condition, or manipulate an image from a medical scanner.
Intimately connected with these two subjects is the theory of Minimal Surfaces. These surfaces have been historically used to model soap films, but the general theory has developed into a powerful tool with applications to a wide range of subjects from black holes to topology. In this direction, we are particularly interested in applying progress on the research challenges of this proposal to unravel the connection between the existence of higher-index minimal surfaces and the singularities that occur in flows and variational problems that are designed to find them.

Planned Impact
A substantial part of the wider economic and societal impact of this proposal will be delivered via other academic research that requires the technology we propose to develop. Our impact in this direction will enhance the effectiveness of UK universities themselves, in addition to boosting their relevance and sustainability. It will keep them up-to-date with modern developments in research in addition to taking them out into the lead in the topics in which we specialise.
A large proportion of the research in this proposal concerns nonlinear partial differential equations, which are central to the financial sector (e.g. to correctly price derivative securities), which in turn accounts for one third of current UK GDP. As a result, members of our groups are in heavy demand by the financial industry and a flow of mathematicians trained in this area is currently essential for the economic prosperity of the nation.
This flow of mathematicians trained in fields that are highly relevant to many other disciplines, such as the fields in this proposal, are also essential to make the UK a fertile area for completely new industries to emerge. It is virtually impossible to give accurate predictions as to the applications, but it is important to consider how companies such as Google have been able to transform mathematical ideas into great economic success, and it is essential that we create an environment in the UK where such development can occur. Our proposal will help achieve this by bringing a critical mass of bright people together, developing them in relevant technology, and where possible, giving them the freedom to innovate.
Mathematicians trained in geometric analysis are also in heavy demand from research institutions at the moment, particularly by universities around the world, including the UK, and indeed including the three institutions involved in this proposal.
Some of the research in this proposal also has the capacity to be directly applicable to specific problems in engineering, science and industry. For example, Geometric Flows have had widespread applications, and countries with long-established expertise in this field such as Germany and the USA have seen their technology filter into industrial applications, being used in medical scanners manufactured by Siemens, for example. We would like to create a similar environment in the UK.
The critical mass that this proposal will generate is expected to accelerate the research funding that has flowed into our groups from abroad as a result of our previous research projects.
In our opinion, our field contains some of the most impressive intellectual achievements that mankind has produced. The significance of this should not be underestimated; it has also contributed substantially to the embedding of mathematics within popular culture. For example, Perelman and his Ricci flow solution of the Poincaré conjecture have been featured as a leading front page story on a number of the UK broadsheet newspapers within the past six years. The Daily Telegraph alone devoted a further eleven articles to this particular topic over the same period. Also in this direction, the understanding of black holes and other cosmological phenomena has always been a topic that has captured the imagination of the public. This publicity is important to the nation since it helps secure a steady flow of students into science, and protects the funding of an economically and culturally important endeavour.

Description | The project was a great success, not just in terms of outputs but also in terms of the training of postdocs. The project ended up double the size of the original proposal owing to a large influx of funds from other sources to support our activity, including the governments of China and Brazil, the ERC, Cambridge University, Imperial college and the University of Warwick. In terms of research, major progress was made across all the main pillars of the original proposal. The field of min-max methods in the study of minimal surfaces was transformed over the period, with much of the leading work internationally associated with this project. Great developments were made in the mathematical relativity aspect of the proposal leading, for example, to a much better understanding of cosmic censorship and the stability of black holes. Geometric flows have also seen spectacular progress over the period, with an example highlight of the project being the resolution of the Anderson-Cheeger-Colding-Tian conjecture concerning the regularity of 3D Ricci limits spaces. The award has 127 publications attached to it, covering these developments, including 5 in Annals of Math, 4 in Inventiones, 8 In Journal of Differential Geometry and 1 in JAMS etc. Further details can be found in the annual reports of the project. |
Exploitation Route | The research associated with this project has led to a surge of activity internationally in the topics covered. At this moment most of the activity that has been generated is within the academic fields of mathematics and physics. |
