Description UKCRIC-NBIF is one of a number of new facilities that have been developed to transform the way that research is done in the UK on infrastructure and cities. This new way of collaborating, rather than competing, amongst institutions is a work in progress, but the ideas are being embraced by local and national government, and industry, as new research programmes are being formulated. It has also spawned collaboration between universities on doctoral education programmes via the UKCRIC Doctoral Skills Network, and the C-DICE Post-Doctoral and Early Career Researchers programme. UKCRIC-NBIF is now carrying out work on large pipes, tunnels, storage chambers, weak soil reinforcement mechanisms and other buried structures, alongside underground mapping and detection studies, for a range of non-academic clients. This work is influencing practice via a direct application of the findings, and more generally by association with UKCRIC. The steady progression of visitors to NBIF is remarkable in terms of breadth and volume.

Description Joint Testing with Aquaspria in NBIF
Organisation Aquaspira
Country United Kingdom
Sector Private
PI Contribution We have utilised NBIF's capability to conduct some material testing using NBIF's capability with particular focus on measuring teh deformations using optical fibres, strain gauges and a total station.
Collaborator Contribution Aquapsira has partially instrumented the composite pipe and provided the pipe itself
Impact Data and understanding of the product behaviour
Start Year 2021

Description Joint Testing with BeMo
Organisation BeMo Tunnelling GmbH
Country Austria
Sector Private
PI Contribution We have instrumented a composite plastic pipe simulating a tunnel with string gauges and optical fibres. Tests then focussed on deforming the pipe and measuring the deformation, while comparing the results from the optical fibres with those obtained from conventional optical targets used with a total station.
Collaborator Contribution BeMo provided the traditional survey equipment including the total station and optical targets (prisms), installed these on site in NBIF and managed the data collection from this. Moreover, they provided a resource for 2 weeks to collaborate on the testing.
Impact The tests evaluate if optical fibres can be used instead of strain gauges to determine the utilisation index of the sprayed concrete lining. If successful it will have a significant impact on future tunnel construction using sprayed concrete lining and the operation and condition monitoring of tunnels. It will significantly improve the safety going forward.

Description Pipeline strain and satellite technology
Organisation Telespazio Vega (IDEAS)
Country United Kingdom
Sector Private
PI Contribution A new grant application was submitted in collaboration with Telepazio UK Ltd to combine buried infrastructure monitoring with satellite imagery to assess if pipes might fail. Satellite imagery can be used to detect ground movement/settlement which can then be translated to strains on buried pipes and thus the impact on their condition.
Collaborator Contribution Telepazio are experts in satellite imagery especially using the Sentinel sensor. They want to exploit the expertise into a new area to provide information on the possible condition of buried pipes.
Impact + Grant application to Yorkshire Water's innovation fund

Description Tunnel Displacement Monitoring using fibre optics
Organisation BeMo Tunnelling GmbH
Country Austria
Sector Private
PI Contribution Research is ongoing to determine if optical fibres can be used to monitor tunnel displacements under construction and move away from the use of prisms and a total station. The experiments will use the National Buried Infrastructure Facility
Collaborator Contribution BeMo brings in their experience from using prisms and total stations during the construction for sprayed concrete lined tunnels and will compare the fundings from this work with what they normally get from the total station. Moreover, they will determine how the new data can be incorporated into the utilisation index calculation.
