Digitally Enhanced Advanced Services Network+

Lead Research Organisation: UNIVERSITY OF EXETER
Department Name: Business and Management

Abstract

This Digital Economy (DE) Network Plus will deliver a vibrant community that will position the UK as the internationally leading research hub for Digitally Enhanced Advanced Services. Rather than focus on the product or service that is delivered DEAS focuses on how the product or service is used. This is a major change in how firms earn money and is being enabled by transformative digital technologies that allows for example, payment per use or availability or outcome. The impact of these changes is in firm productivity. The traditional focus of productivity (outputs/inputs) is on internal efficiency. However, digital technologies can also transform the value of the output (payment for use, availability or outcome). Haldane (Chief Economist of the Bank of England) in his recent report on productivity puzzle (essentially stagnant growth since the financial crash) argues that despite the advent of the digital age and their adoption by some leading companies there is a very long tail of poorly productive firms across all sectors. He calls for the development of, for example, online tools that will speed the process of technological diffusion to the long tail. The development of the underpinning digital technologies for the purposes of developing DEAS is the key research challenge adopted by this Network+.

Planned Impact

Our aim is to develop a community of industry and scholars around the theme of Digitially Enhanced Advanced Services. This includes research topics such as: AI techniques, data analytics, HCI, associated technologies, and service business model innovation within the context of manufacturing, transport and insurance sectors.

We have a number of direct pathways to impact through our pilot studies and the engagement of our project partners. Specifically, for manufacturing there are a considerable range of potential SME beneficiaries including: Clevedon Fastners; MNB; Nicklin and UV Lights. There are also larger manufacturers including: Aggregate Industries (providing £40k in cash for an early stage pilot), Rolls Royce and GE. For transport our potential pilot studies include Resonate, Axis Fleet Management and Microlise. For insurance, we have potential cases with Royal Sun Alliance, Legal and General and smaller brokers through the support of Lloyds Corporation. More widely we will be linking our analytics and HCI insights with practitioners such as Gartner and the emerging data analytics business at Interroute (world's 5th largest cloud services provider).
As we have stated in the Case for Support we will develop a taxonomy and formal repository of successful DEAS use-cases to provide a platform for scale up research and practice. This will be made available to a wider group through the support of Sam Turner and HMV Catapult, AFRC (Glasgow) and AMRC (Sheffield), Lloyds Banking Group manufacturing advisors, Knowledge Transfer Network (KTN), the Road Haulage Association, British Vehicle Renting and Leasing Association, Society for Motor Manufactures and Traders and in insurance through the Lloyds Corporation and Huntswood. We also have strong links to the Association of British Insurers and will pursue those as the project progresses.
In addition, through our three major research groups (ASAP, ASG and CODE) we have a total database of over 250 companies with regular events that bring together large communities of users. In the later stages of the Network, we will introduce opportunities for extending funding into other sectors e.g. the wider professional services where we have an Innovate UK grant (AUTTO - Intelligent Micro-Automation). This links strongly to the recommendations of the forthcoming Blackett report on services.

Description This EPSRC-funded NetworkPlus is bringing together a community that will position the UK as the internationally leading research hub for Digitally Enhanced Advanced Services. Rather than focus on the product or service that is delivered Digitally Enhanced Advanced Services (DEAS) focus on how the product or service is used. Our vision is that the UK should be the internationally leading research and practice hub for the innovation of Digitally Enhanced Advanced Services (DEAS). To support this ambition the EPSRC award will be used to create a network of businesses and researchers to enable a coordinated programme of research to be designed and piloted. Over £600k of this funding will be cascaded to researchers across the communities of business, computer science and human factors, to stimulate their engagement in these pilots.
Exploitation Route Companies adopting servitization strategies will be able to use our approach to identify the benefits and challenges and build their IP based on our use cases. The project has also worked closely with colleagues in Manufacturing Made Smarter and both the High Value Manufacturing Catapult and the Digital Catapult.
The project has led at an Innovate UK award: Digital Servitization with Baxi Boilers.
The project has also led to 'Understanding how servitization can impact UK economic productivity and environmental performance' a £1.5m award to Prof Baines (ES/W010194/1).

Description One major impact has been in our 'use case' company Baxi Boilers. Two of our 4 manufacturing feasibility studies are working alongside Baxi to identify how digital technologies can transform their product offerings. these include further understanding of 'heat as a service'. This is further reflected in the Innovate UK funded 'Demonstrator' project. Most of the projects have now completed eg the DEAS projects in the Transport and Charities are complete. The charities and voluntary sector research agenda is available see, Wood, Z. and Godsiff, P. Digitally Enhanced Advanced Services EPSRC Network Plus Charity and Voluntary Research Agenda, May 2021, www.deas.ac.uk The DEAS Charity/Voluntary Call was a direct response to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the development of this report, the following impacts of COVID in the charity/voluntary sector were highlighted: • Communication within and between the communities that charities serve is important. COVID has changed how the communication takes places with increase use of digital tools and social media. • COVID has brought some charities together to form new partnerships. • Smaller charities have been able to be more flexible and agile during COVID. • Some charities thrived during COVID where others did not. Work is needed to understand what role business models played in this. • Some projects within the sector were only funded during COVID and it is likely that these will have to stop post-pandemic due to a lack of funding. • COVID has given motivation to make a change to the use of digital. We have extended the award by 9 months to allow for those sub-awards funded by DEAS in finance to report and to contribute to our final workshop. 2023 - further impact has been achieved through a number of presentations led by the Aston Servitization group: https://www.advancedservicesgroup.co.uk/. A major new ESRC award has been won with a focus on how servitization can impact UK economic productivity and environmental performance such as net zero and the green economy and use these insights to influence industrial policy and practice in the UK. The Servitization Doctoral Symposium was on the 7th & 8th December 2022 where research outputs from DEAS were presented. The work of DEAS and the Advanced Services Group was selected from amongst hundreds of projects to be featured in the final a report by the UK government's main research funding body, the UKRI. The final report 'Impact of EPSRC's Manufacturing the Future programme 2005 to 2020' demonstrates the importance of research investment in the latest manufacturing technologies and practices. DEAS also provided considerable background knowledge for the UKRI project 'Understanding how servitization can impact UK economic productivity and environmental performance'. DEAS research also continues to be a major contributor to the next stage digital economy award 'DIGIT_Lab'. Servitization remains a major research interest for this team with Aston Business School widely recognised as world leaders.

Title Development of a digital twin prototype for a DEAS value delivery system
Description The present Digital Twin project has been funded through the manufacturing stream of the DEAS NetworkPlus programme. It focused on the digital twin technology to address two of the critical research questions the DEAS NetworkPlus initiative has established as critical for the further development of Advanced Services in the manufacturing context. A digital twin describes a continuously updated virtual representation of a real-world system; it offers a current and historical understanding of the states and behaviours of the system's physical and process elements and also enables simulations that identifies and illustrates the emerging states of these elements. Digital twin technology has been applied to monitor, manage and maintain the performance and condition of physical products as they are used. They are also used to create a real-time model of production processes, in order to manage performance levels. The novelty of this project is the application of digital twin to a value delivery network, in other words understanding how service delivery personnel, products, information and customers can all be incorporated in a dynamic, digital model.
Type Of Technology New/Improved Technique/Technology
Year Produced 2020
Impact The project shows how the digital twin technology can support the value creation, delivery and capture across DEAS networks in a number of ways. VALUE CREATION The project has shown and illustrated several pathways for the digital twin's contribution to value creation. Most importantly, it has shown how the digital twin has the potential to form the basis for new advanced service value propositions. The transparency and advanced analytics of the product use enabled by the digital twin provides the manufacturer with additional insights that help create additional opportunities for the customer. Although the provision of heat and comfort represents the core HaaS value proposition, the digital twin provides the manufacturer with the opportunity to create additional value for the customer by supporting the customer's heating efficiency and reducing the cost of heating. VALUE DELIVERY The project has also highlighted pathways for the digital twin to support the effective delivery of value to the customer. The analysis has shown how the digital twin can help ensure the HaaS proposition of uninterrupted heat and comfort is provided. The digital twin in this context contributes to predictive maintenance (reducing unplanned downtime), to the bundling of maintenance visits (reducing second visit), to remote maintenance/trouble-shooting (increasing speed of response), and to equipping the right technician with the right tools (reduce the need for second visit)
