Abstract
The University of Dundee offers a wide range of research areas for EPSRC DTP funded projects. These can be found within, and at the interfaces of, the spectrum of cutting edge research carried out in disciplines such as biomedical, civil and mechanical engineering; computer science; forensic science; mathematics; physics as well as in areas associated with art and design, especially linked to topics such as digital identity. Our core strengths lie in research interests such as: medical device development using ultrasound and photonics, geotechnical engineering linked to earthquakes and offshore engineering, fluid mechanics associated with ocean dynamics and flooding, materials and biomaterials engineering, forensic science for analysing novel psychoactive substances and digital identification, mathematical biology with links to experimental life and medical sciences, numerical analysis, computational soft matter physics and biophysics, biophotonics, materials science, laser-materials interactions, argumentation technology, computer vision and image processing along with assistive technologies. Our work in Art and Design explores areas such as the human experience in a digital age, aspects of design of medical instrumentation along with ubiquitous computing, the internet of things, data visualisation and humancomputer interaction.
Our projects are typically interdisciplinary with DTP students often working across one of more of the above areas, possibly gaining experience working with life and medical scientists, social scientists, the NHS or a range of industrial and other partners. Students recruited onto DTP projects have access to a wealth of training opportunities from subject specialist courses through to more general skills training providing a balance for each PhD student between technical and employability skills. This includes opportunities for entrepreneurship training and funding.
DTP studentships are typically advertised towards the end of the calendar year with the selection process at the start of the new year. They are offered on an open competition basis with the quality of the student being the key criterion.
