Description | Urban Green DaMS (UGDaMS) has involved the commissioning of four large scale experimental lysimeter bioretention systems to provide long-term monitoring data relating to the functioning of Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). Lysimeter commissioning was completed at the UKCRIC National Green Infrastructure Facility in Autumn 2020. The UGDaMS lysimeters allow an understanding of the capacity and effectiveness of monitored bioretention systems to attenuate urban flooding. Each lysimeter has been equipped with a dense network of multi-parameter sensors, allowing spatiotemporal soil-atmosphere interactions to be observed and changes in relation to weather events to be quantified. Further, the lysimeters have been subjected to design storm events outside of the instrumented recorded to determine how SuDS respond to high intensity rainfall events. Project findings suggest that bioretention systems can effectively manage and attenuate urban rainfall-runoff processes, providing a sustainable approach to reducing stress on traditional grey infrastructure. Results from the lysimeter experiments provide a high resolution monitored evidence-base for informed future urban planning and the development of best management practices of urban surface water using sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) to a wide range of stakeholders, where monitoring data is lacking. Research outputs on experimental monitoring and experimentation are already under review / in preparation for submission to internationally recognised academic journals. Description | The nature of the research is very applied, so there has been alot of industry interest following presentations at the International Conference on Urban Drainage 2021 and wider outreach and public engagement activities across NGIF, including Open Days, online engagement events and bespoke stakeholder visits. Data from the four large-scale, fully functional bioretention systems is being used by partners to improve design of green infrastructure for urban flood management. Partners include Innovyze, CIRIA, Newcastle and Sheffield City Councils, Arup, Welsh Water, Northumbrian Water. Through a workshop with the Construction Industry Research and Information Association (CIRIA) we discussed the impact of this work on design, implementation, regulatory targets, and guidance including incorporation into the forthcoming update of CIRIA's The SuDS Manual (C753F). We have since began partnerships with Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh to apply this research to functional systems within the groups of the Botanic Gardens. This strategic relationship is currently being leveraged to apply for collaborative funding opportunities. Further, this research has led to securing funding from: a NERC IAPETUS2 PhD Studentship focusing on the monitoring and maintenance of SuDS; the RECLAIM Network+ to support a workshop on green infrastructure maintenance (May 2024); and have been competitively awarded a large-scale hill slope simulator (~£500k value) which will be used to compare the lysimeter responses to rainfall-runoff processes simulated in a controlled laboratory environment. |

Results and Impact | Bioretention research and practice This free event, hosted by The University of Sheffield and Newcastle University, provided insight into the outcomes and impacts of a three-year collaborative research project (Urban Green DaMS) to improve design parameters for biofilters/raingardens. Drainage/flood protection engineers need to be able to quantify how SuDS devices respond to rainfall events - including the extreme events that are responsible for flooding - to effectively use SuDS for stormwater management purposes. Biofilters (also known as raingardens) manage runoff from catchments typically ten times larger than their own plan area and provide filtration of pollutants associated with road runoff. The 'Urban Green DaMS' project collected data from a combination of full-scale test beds (lysimeters) at Newcastle University and column tests at The University of Sheffield. The data will help understand and quantify the influence of design parameters (growing media composition, planting selection and outlet control configuration) on the rainfall retention (ET rates) and runoff detention performance (K values and outlet controls) of lined biofilter systems. Findings of the three-year EPSRC-funded collaborative research project were summarised by the researchers and use of the data within modelling for rainwater management was discussed. SuDS practitioners talked about the impact of this work on design, implementation, regulatory targets, and guidance including incorporation into the forthcoming update of CIRIA's The SuDS Manual (C753F). They also provided an overview of important ongoing retrofit SuDS projects. |
