International Network for Spintronics: From Material Development to Novel Energy Efficient Technologies
Lead Research Organisation:
University of York
Department Name: Electronics
Abstract
The broad aim of this project is to demonstrate a new spintronic logic concept with low-energy consumption by developing a new magnetic material, designing a new logic circuit and characterising them for yield improvement based on our long-standing collaborations with Tohoku University in Japan specialised in material development and device production, Technische Universität Kaiserslautern in Germany focused on magneto-optical phenomena and magnonic logics, and Spintec in France dedicated for spintronic device production and evaluation. Based on the complementarity of these consortium members, we aim to achieve (1) over 200 man-days annual visits to Japan, (2) over 100 man-days annual visits to Germany and France, (3) six pump priming funds to foster new collaborative projects, (4) organisation of biannual research symposia in York to disseminate our achievements.

Description | Covid impacted activities at the start of the network grant and we have been granted a no-cost extension to April 2028 to account for this and ensure the originally planned activities can still take place. To date the network has delivered the following events and activities: Kick-off meeting (online, 7-9 June 2021) ECR Network Meeting (Leeds, 19-20 May 2022) Symposium on Spintronics (IMEC, 5-6 Dec 2022) INS-ECRM conference (Tohoku, 12-13 May 2023) 2023 pump priming call (Feb 2023) - Awarded to Kilian D. Stenning (UCL/ICL) & Jack C. Gartside (ICL) for collaboration on nanomagnetic arrays for neuromorphic hardware with Prof. Takeshi Seki (Tohoku University). |
Exploitation Route | Publications, new collaborations and following on projects will follow on from the networking events and collaborative activities supported by this grant. |
Sectors | Digital/Communication/Information Technologies (including Software) |
Description | Pump priming project 2023 |
Organisation | Tohoku University |
Country | Japan |
Sector | Academic/University |
PI Contribution | Following an open national call from the network we awarded funds to Kilian D. Stenning (UCL/ICL) & Jack C. Gartside (ICL) to undertake a new collaboration with Prof. Takeshi Seki (Tohoku University) on development of nanomagnetic arrays for neuromorphic hardware. The initial phase of the collaboration has been very successful with a broad suite of samples fabricated with different multilayered architectures and materials, all of which were not possible to fabricate at the applicants' host institutions of UCL and Imperial College London. Publications are currently being drafted. Gartside, Stenning & Prof. Seki will be continuing this work, applying for visiting JSPS fellow status & collaborative international funding via the JST 'ASPIRE (Adopting Sustainable Partnerships for Innovative Research Ecosystem) for Top Scientists/Aspire for Top Teams' funding routes. Further new international collaboration has been initiated based on the results of this trip between Dr's Gartside & Stenning (UK), Prof Johan Akerman (Tohoku/Gothenburg Universities) & Prof Shunsuke Fukami (Tohoku University) on developing novel architectures for spintronic neuromorphic computing. First proof-of-concept experiments have been performed with promising results. Funding bids are in development to support future work following the initial successful pump-priming enabled by the network. |
Collaborator Contribution | Prof. Takeshi Seki (Tohoku University) provided access to facilities and resources for fabrication of multilayered architectures and materials. |

Results and Impact | This talk was given as a n invited talk at the "EPSRC International Network for Spintronics Kick-Off Meeting: From Material Development to Novel Energy Efficient Technologies" on 7 June 2021. The symposium was held online using Zoom for the first time due to the coronavirus pandemic and travel restriction currently imposed. This has both advantages and disadvantages on the organisation of the symposium. As the advantages, we successfully attracted over 230 participants from 27 countries and encouraged exciting discussion. On the other hand, the online format limited to ask questions directly to presenters unfortunately, which was partially compensated by the networking time allocated at the end of sessions each day. |
