Title | Inside out: What you don't see - {RMB} |
Description | 'Inside Out: What You Don't See' was an exhibition held at the Naughton Gallery, Queen's University Belfast. It consisted of fifteen pieces of art produced by prisoners in HMP Maghaberry who attended the Donard Day Centre (a mental health facility). The artwork explores issues of mental health and how prison impacts on the well-being of prisoners and their families. The project was a collaboration between the Northern Ireland Prison Service (NIPS), the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust (SEHCT), Prison Arts Foundation and Queen's University Belfast. |
Type Of Art | Artistic/Creative Exhibition |
Year Produced | 2014 |
Impact | The project helped to highlight the benefits of creative interventions for prisoners. This has led to an increased level of provision of art interventions in the Donard Day Centre and in other parts of the Northern Ireland prison estate. The exhibition also helped to increase public awareness of the public health implications of imprisonment. |

Results and Impact | Studies across the world have consistently shown that people from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds experience worse health than those in more socio-economically advantaged positions. In the UK and internationally policies are being implemented to try to reduce these inequalities, with limited success. In order to develop more effective interventions we need a better understanding of how these health differences are generated and maintained. This study aims to investigate the effect of socioeconomic status on clinical outcomes, healthcare use and employment opportunities in people with cystic fibrosis. Because cystic fibrosis is genetically determined, this offers an opportunity to investigate the impact of socioeconomic status on health and social outcomes, in a chronic condition without a socioeconomic gradient in incidence. Using longitudinal modeling techniques, I am analysing the national cystic fibrosis registers from the UK and Denmark to investigate relationships with health inequalities. For example, are there differences in lung function, access to healthcare, survival, educational attainment and employment, for people living in different socio-economic circumstances? These insights will inform the development of policies to improve public health and patient care for people with cystic fibrosis and more generally. David Taylor-Robinson is a Clinical Lecturer in Public Health, and an MRC Population Health Scientist Fellow in the Department of Public Health and Policy at the University of Liverpool. His Fellowship project involves exploring pathways to health inequalities by undertaking a longitudinal analysis of the UK and Danish Cystic Fibrosis Registers. Previously he trained in paediatrics at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool, and is broadly interested in issues of child public health. |
