Impact | Issues relating to the growth and development of small firms are of direct relevance to national and regional policy-making. In this regard, the momentum created by my leadership of the aforementioned ESRC funded projects has been instrumental in helping develop data on diversity, growth and enterprise development which has influenced the national and European policy agendas, as evidenced through the 2015 Burt Report 'Inclusive Support for Women in Enterprise'. Many of the report's recommendations were based on the EDA's impact 'best-practice' document on diversity and enterprise support. These have also been featured in the Sunday Telegraph [June 2013] as well as informing the Women's Enterprise Scotland strategy document for 2015-16. Furthermore, I have presented this work to select committees, the House of Lords and members of the European Commission; and I have been working with the European Commission and colleagues in Brussels in an advisory capacity to develop mentoring support models for minority enterprise. As a result, this work on mentoring and innovative models of business support was promoted as examples of 'best practice' in national and European policy arenas [Lloyds Banking Group, British Bankers' Association, and OECD]. This work is casting new light on academic debates on diversity and entrepreneurship amongst disadvantaged groups and is having policy impact in terms of business policy and knowledge transfer |

Results and Impact | Engaging Small Firms, Corporates and Policy-Makers: What impact does Mentoring Make? Developing management and leadership capability through the up-take of business mentoring is a major pillar of business support strategy. Through a partnership with small firms, banks and large businesses, successive governments have encouraged a huge boost to the availability and accessibility of business mentoring opportunities but what is the value of business mentoring to the growth and survival of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs)? The Enterprise & Diversity Alliance (EDA) in conjunction with women's Enterprise Scotland and GrowBiz held an an interactive workshop which explored how innovative approaches to mentoring can bridge the management and leadership gap in minority and female owned businesses. The workshop considered the research and policy implication with the aim of raising awareness and stimulating action to further advance this important agenda The event will address: • How we can provide relevant and appropriate support to help diverse small firms realise their full potential • How developing leadership and management capability can support local growth • How mentoring can make a difference to women's enterprise |
