Abstract
Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.

Description | The MINOS(+) experiment has continued to be at the forefront of the research effort into the mysterious sub-atomic world of the neutrino. Neutrinos are ghostly particles that hardly ever interact with matter but which may have played a critical role in explaining the evolution of the universe. The MINOS(+) experiment has set some of the most stringent limits on the existence of sterile neutrinos; these are hypothetical particles which are even more elusive than 'regular' neutrinos but may help explain anomalies seen in many previous experiments. For further details the recent null finding in the MINOS+ sterile neutrino search featured as the main news story in the March 2019 edition of the CERN Courier. An updated analysis released in 2020 has further disfavoured the sterile neutrino hypothesis. |
Exploitation Route | The field of neutrino oscillations is a vibrant field with a wide range of currently proposed future experiments. All of these future experiments build upon the knowledge gained with and the techniques developed for the MINOS experiments. MINOS was the first long-baseline neutrino experiment in the US. NOvA is the current generation of US long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments and the future experiment DUNE is under construction. |

PI Contribution | The UK collaborators have provided the spokesperson and two of the last four analysis coordinators of the experiment. They have also provided scientific leadership in all flagship MINOS analyses. |
Collaborator Contribution | Fermilab provides the NuMI neutrino beam used by the MINOS experiment. Fermilab is also responsible for the operations of the MINOS detectors and of the laboratory at Soudan. |
Impact | Multidisciplinary contributions to climate physics. |
