The Newcastle 85+ Study: maintaining the health of the very old
Lead Research Organisation:
Newcastle University
Department Name: Institute for Ageing and Health
Abstract
Abstracts are not currently available in GtR for all funded research. This is normally because the abstract was not required at the time of proposal submission, but may be because it included sensitive information such as personal details.
Technical Summary
The Newcastle 85+ Study aims to expose the spectrum of health within an inception cohort of 85 year-olds, selected without regard to health status as far as is possible, and to examine in unprecedented detail the associations of health outcomes and trajectories with biological, medical and social factors as the cohort ages. Its focus is on the phenotype of the 85+-year old, its intra-population variance, and the factors which might explain variation in health trajectories. This age group is demographically the fastest growing section of the population, yet there is remarkably little up-to-date information about it. Understanding what influences health trajectories in this age group is likely also to provide important general insights into the ageing process itself and what affects it.

Title | Database |
Description | We have created a well structured database to hold the very extensive phenotypic, functional and other descriptive data from the study. This is currently under development while assessments are ongoing. It will be used first to conduct analyses internally and we will later seek to make it (or suitable parts of it) more widely available. We also have a collection of biological samples obtained from bloods from a large fraction of participants. Most of the samples have now been subjected to analysis for candidate biomarkers of ageing. A small amount of material remains for possible further work. DNAs are currently undergoing GWA screening for genetic association studies. |
Type Of Material | Model of mechanisms or symptoms - mammalian in vivo |
Provided To Others? | No |
Impact | We are beginning to publish results from the analysis of this resource which we believe is the most complete description yet available of the health status of a cohort of 85+ year olds. |

PI Contribution | This is a joint project co-funded by MRC and Unilever. we provide access to the Newcastle 85+ study population for further investigations and we also provide expertise in biomarker analysis for studies conducted within the MRC Unit for Lifelong Health and Ageing. |
Collaborator Contribution | Direct funding covered staff time for a research nurse, PI time and a PhD studentship. In addition contributions in kind were made totalling a further £305000. The latter included activity monitors used within the study for 7-day activity monitoring as well as expertise in data analysis of recordings from these monitors, and various biossays. |
Impact | Considerable progress has been made in gathering new data and performing analyses. These have been reported at collaborator meetings. Given the ongoing nature of the data gathering there have not yet been any publications though these will in due course happen. |

I highlighted the fact that, with health inequalities, certain regions would face more of a problem in retaining older workers and that those of retirement age are increasingly likely to be caring for a very old parent as the very old are the fastest growing demographic.
