Abstract
Worldwide, seaweed aquaculture has been developing at an unabated exponential pace over the last six decades. China, Japan, and Korea lead the world in terms of quantities produced. Other Asiatic countries, South America and East Africa have an increasingly significant contribution to the sector. On the other hand, Europe and North America have a long tradition of excellent research in phycology, yet hardly any experience in industrial seaweed cultivation. The Blue Growth economy agenda creates a strong driver to introduce seaweed aquaculture in the UK.
GlobalSeaweed:
- furthers NERC-funded research via novel collaborations with world-leading scientists;
- imports know-how on seaweed cultivation and breeding into the UK;
- develops training programs to fill a widening UK knowledge gap;
- structures the seaweed sector to streamline the transfer of research results to the seaweed industry and policy makers at a global scale;
- creates feedback mechanisms for identifying emergent issues in seaweed cultivation.
This ambitious project will work towards three strands of deliverables: Knowledge creation, Knowledge Exchange and Training. Each of these strands will have specific impact on key beneficiary groups, each of which are required to empower the development of a strong UK seaweed cultivation industry. A multi-pronged research, training and financial sustainability roadmap is presented to achieve long-term global impact thanks to NERC's pump-priming contribution. The overarching legacy will be the creation of a well-connected global seaweed network which, through close collaboration with the United Nations University, will underpin the creation of a Seaweed International Project Office (post-completion of the IOF award).

Planned Impact
Seaweeds are used in a vast array of manufactured foods and as a source for hydrocolloids of commercial importance to the food processing, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. The seaweed market has been developing exponentially over the last six decades, but there is a sharp East-West asymmetry in production methods. Most of the world's cultivated algae come from Asia, whereas European countries are almost entirely reliant on harvesting natural sea beds, which are at risk of over-exploitation. Therefore, the growth of the EU seaweed industry necessitates introducing seaweed cultivation in Europe. There would be a huge benefit not only to import know-how on seaweed aquaculture from outside Europe, but also to identify, analyse and learn from issues that recurrently emerge in seaweed-cultivating countries. These issues include in particular pests that impact on production yields or on neighbouring native stocks. They affect the sustainability of supply for this multi-billion dollar global industry and food security, as well as the protection of native seaweed biodiversity and integrated coastal management. It is paramount therefore that as the industry expands both in the UK and globally that appropriate disease control methods and environmental policies are developed, to avoid both economic loss and irreversible environmental damage. This requires international cooperation and the development of a global and proactive research strategy.
GlobalSeaweed will connect disparate pockets of excellence in seaweed research around the globe and facilitate the transfer of industrial algal cultivation knowledge from East to West, through mutually beneficial pure phycological research. This two-way flow of knowledge and skills will facilitate industry development in the UK, creating significant opportunities for jobs and growth, and secure UK leadership in phycological research globally. The project will work towards three strands of deliverables: Knowledge creation, Knowledge Exchange and Training. Each strand will have specific impact on key beneficiary groups, namely researcher, academics, the private sector and policy makers, each of which are required to empower the development of a strong UK seaweed cultivation industry. The key overall impact will be the creation of a well-connected global seaweed network which, through close collaboration with the United Nations University, will become sustainable through the creation of an International Project Office (post-IOF), ensuring a lasting legacy of impact of this project. Many project partners have committed their support to make practical use of the research outputs, and also expressed in their respective letter their enthusiasm in participating or funding GlobalSeaweed-related activities.

Description | Our vision: Seaweeds are used in a vast array of manufactured foods and as a source for hydrocolloids of commercial importance to the food processing, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. The seaweed market has been developing exponentially over the last six decades, but there is a sharp East-West asymmetry in production methods. This two-way flow of knowledge and skills will facilitate industry development in the UK, creating significant opportunities for jobs and growth, and secure UK leadership in phycological research globally. Update 2017: Research activities are now in full swing, underpinned by many novel collaborations with researchers worldwide. This includes the development of nephelometry for algal phenomics (Secondment Calmes, MS in prep.), the identification of bioactives efficient against protistan pathogens of seaweeds (Secondment Prado, 2x MS in prep and patent application in progress), the characterisation of novel brown algal pathogens (secondment Murua, 2x MS in prep), the omics of the red algal pathogens Pythium porphyrae and Olpidiopsis (collab with Pr. Kim, Univ. Kongju, 2x MS in prep.) and the discovery of novel algal diseases (Badis, MS in prep.). We also contribute to the development of genome resources for brown and red seaweeds, in particular via our contribution to the Porphyra umbilicalis genome consortium (MS submitted). |
Exploitation Route | The project works towards three strands of deliverables: Knowledge creation, Knowledge Exchange and Training. Each strand will have specific impact on key beneficiary groups, namely researcher, academics, the private sector and policy makers, each of which are required to empower the development of a strong UK seaweed cultivation industry. The key overall impact will be the creation of a well-connected global seaweed network which, through close collaboration with the United Nations University, will become sustainable through the creation of an International Project Office (post-IOF), ensuring a lasting legacy of impact of this project. the project is at the beginning of its third year, and we believe that we are on course to deliver exceptional impact in all three abovementioned strands. We are also building on this success, and actively pursuing opportunities for future funding. |

Description | 2016: In line with networking spirit of this grant on seaweed aquaculture, our activities have had a strong focus on connecting stakeholders at a global scale, notably through our proactive engagement in high profile research conferences (Seaweed World Expo, Wando, Korea; Conference of the International Society for Applied Phycology, Sydney, Australia; SOFILAC conference, Mexico; EPC6, UK; Seaweed productivity and marketability). Carefully selected speakers, with due consideration to expertise, geographic origin, gender, and professional background, were invited and have contributed to the high profile of each event. Consistent engagement with classic and online media has been made, at all scales (from local to global). We are attempting to reach professionals worldwide, especially using social media. the GlobalSeaweed Linkedin platform that has already organically grown to 200+ members from highly diverse backgrounds. The first GlobalSeaweed summerschool was fully booked and ran back-to-back with a workshop on seaweed productivity and marketability, which attacted 100 registrants. Update March 2017: We have continued our face-to-face engagement via conferences, and our second summer school was oversubscribed. A conservative estimate is that we have reached a 500+ stakeholders from 30 countries, on top of our online activities (Linkedin group & open access resources). Our policy brief on "Safeguarding the future of the global seaweed aquaculture industry", which drew on the expertise of 18 authors from 21 institutions worldwide, received media coverage in 6 languages at 115 online news sites in 40 countries, plus TV and radio coverage (including the BBC World Service TV and Radio 4), CBS Radio and Science Friday (USA), and ABC Radio (Australia). This document is a stepping stone to introduce biosecurity concepts in the fast-growing algal cultivation industry. We are confident that it will contribute in shaping the policies of key national and international organisations (e.g. UN, FAO). The challenges ahead are to further strengthen the science science-base underpinning the exponentially-growing, globalised, seaweed-cultivation industry. To this end, we have reinforced our links with several learned societies, and have secured a major EU grant to develop biosecurity and omics-empowered breeding on European kelp species. Since most seaweed cultivation occurs in developing countries, we are also actively pursuing opportunities for further funding via GCRF. Update 2018: The underpinning quality of the research, teaching and worldwide-networking undertaken under the NERC GlobalSeaweed has been rewarded by a £5.2 m GCRF capacity building grant, GlobalSeaweed*, which aims to increase the sustainability of seaweed aquaculture in developing countries. The research capability developed under GlobalSeaweed, materialised for example thorugh a patent application on molecules that protect seaweeds against diseases, will be projected internationally to further UK's scientific leadership in this fast-growing sector. Policy-makers will be fully included at all levels (CEFAS for the UK, and internationally, through continued, reinforced connections with the United Nations University and the UN FAO, among others. Peer-reviewed publications associated to this grant are accumulating, contributing to its high visibility, on top of our continued intense conference engagement (BPS 2017 UK, OMGN 2017 USA, ISAP 2017 France, IPC 2017 Poland, UK Algae 2017, Seaweed workshop Chile 2017, BPS 2018 UK). We also directly supported the organisation of events through sponsorship of travel for overseas early-career researchers (ISAP 2017), supported travel of leading international speakers in a special session (IPC 2017), and organised the third annual GlobalSeaweed summer school at SAMS (event was so successful that it was oversubscribed). Update 2019: further peer-reviewed articles have been published, associated to this award. Update 2020: Networking activities and community building have continued, in particular through the GCRF award GlobalSeaweed-STAR. Most notably, the past year has seen the acceptance of several key peer-reviewed publications: one describes the pervasiveness of hitherto unknown algal pathogens in UK waters, with implications for biosecurity an ecosystem conservation in the UK and elsewhere in the world; another explores novel technology towards non-invasive, cost-effective, medium throughput phenotyping of seaweed for their efficient selection and breeding; a joint publication with our Korean collaborators deals with the disease response of Pyropia, the economically most valuable seaweed worldwide. Finally, we reported the roles autophagy in deciding the outcome of host-pathogne interaction in a marine brown alga: a fundamental, serendipitous, and arguably seminal finding that we were able to work on thanks to the resources of the grant, amongst others. |

Impact | This patent application describes what is essentially the first-ever phytosanitary compound applicable to marine algal cultivation worldwide. Efforts are ongoing to licence the molecules. However, we believe that the main impact of this patent application is to provide a proof-of-concept for the feasibility and applicability of discovering and using phytosanitary products in open sea, and will accrodingly stimulate further research and investment into this novel market. |
